Re: Radios
I use the Icom PCR1000, completely automatic and controlled by the PC. My software is Mscan meteo. Weatherfax reception is mostly good, RTTY is excellent but I have a problem autosaving it, and I have never received a Navtex broadcast. Not a big problem as I have a NASA Navtex anyway, but it would be nice to know why.
The good thing about this setup is that it is totally automatic, preprogram reception times, frequencies, etc and leave it alone. The bad thing is that there are cables everywhere, definitely not suitable for using at sea unless I built everything in, which I cannot do. Also need to locate the laptop carefully, as it generates lots of interference itself.
My experience is that you should buy the software from someone who knows how it works. I struggled for ages with mine and never received a thing. I took an afternoon to visit the software designer and he had it receiving in about 10 minutes.
