It is difficult to understand how you could legitimately get UK charts free of charge, yet have any realistic chart / navigation data.
Almost all UK charts are based on underlying UKHO chart data - even if lots of other layers added on top.
And unlike the USA equivalent, our Government requires UKHO to be self funded so (other than a few exceptions) the UK chart data needs to be paid for. Per the other thread linked to, can buy UK wide charts quite cheaply for mobile devices from various sources - sometimes based upon UKHO/ Admiralty raster charts (eg MemoryMap, Visit My Harbour etc), sometimes from UKHO vector chart data (Navionics, Imray etc)

Yes. That's what made in unique . I'm guessing it's from an overseas source that has mapped certain areas. Thanks for all the contributions.

I have found an ap called Mx Mariner. These are raster charts for Andoid.
The ap is free and there are four of five chart areas for the UK. The areas cost £4 each. I now have a stand alone chart plotter on my phone for £4. Can't believe it so cheap.

Sounds good. Let us know how you get on with it if you can. How big are the area charts for the 4 quid?

Do let us know what it offers.
What I will need includes good detail charts up the rivers and estuaries.
Also ISTM that having 'UK only' coverage might go a bit sour if you were e.g. headed for Jersey and decided that Cherbourg looked like a sensible tactic.

The Imray product is essentially for Windows PCs or tablets, and costs £120 for a year's package, for e.g. South Coast and Channel.

If MX is different source data to Navionics, it might be worth buying a few £4 areas just as a 'second opinion'. I can't see a catalogue of area packages without downloading the app?

Worth checking the source of data for the charts - to check that they have relevant information.
Also, very importantly, if raster charts, what is the scale of the charts. The UKHO raster charts from VmH, Memory Map etc are of various scales including many detailed ones at 1:25,000.
Some other raster charts are only 1:150,000 or so, so lack detail for other than offshore passage planning

Good points. Flicking through, the zoom works well. I note that you get one free update on purchase. Would be nice to know how often the updates are available and how they compare with Navionics .

Earlier you said they were raster charts, in which case surely no real zoom function? Just get a fixed image at the scale the original chart was created at.

Mx mariner has been a great app , but over the past years the resolution appears to have got more blurry. Many have commented on this on Google play and even sent emails but it seems the developer no longer replies.
I have looked through many nav apps and it's not clear cut the price and what coverage you get without signing up.
