Three of the most influential organisations within the UK marine industry have joined forces to produce a beginner's guide on purchasing a new boat. The Association of Brokers & Yacht Agents (ABYA), the British Marine Federation (BMF) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) have jointly published a leaflet entitled "Buying A Boat: A Short Guide" which is packed with information for prospective first-time buyers.

"We are constantly amazed that consumers are prepared to buy a boat, that might be tens of thousands of pounds, without undertaking some very basic checks beforehand, such as whether there is any outstanding finance on the boat or getting the boat surveyed," says Jane Gentry, chief executive of ABYA. "Thankfully, repercussions are still relatively uncommon but we feel this new leaflet not only gives very clear guidelines and advice but also peace of mind to the prospective boat buyer".

The free booklet offers a 13-point checklist for those wishing to buy a new boat, and a 10-point list for those buying second-hand. Endorsed by the Bank of Scotland, Barclays and Lombard (three of the biggest marine finance houses in the UK), the guide was designed to protect the interests of UK boat buyers before parting with what could easily be their life savings.

Steve,
If you think GB would hand tax collection to ANYBODY else, especially anybody concerned for that industry, well not while he's breathing anyway. Great dream though!
