Free anchorages with facilites - East Coast.

Thinking about young Nathan Lee, who is attempting to circumnavigate UK on diddly squat, I thought it would be nice if we could post the free East Coast anchorages with pub, shop, bit of transport nearby. i.e. Somewhere you could bide a while, say a week, without anyone getting upset or moving you on.

The shop ought to be a general store, with the transport link to spares & repairs or civilisation no more than a mile or so.
Sheltered to most conditions, maybe not drying, but that would be ok I guess.


I will kick off and say Brandy Hole at Hullbridge on the Crouch. 4 sailing clubs, numerous pubs, a supermarket or two, even a pharmacy and doctors.

About 1/2 a mile to hook to the sea wall for your dinghy. You could pick up one of the club moorings for a while.
 
FFS. How is this bloke going to grow up and gain experience if you all mollycoddle him?

Next you will be suggesting that forumites meet him at his next objective with freshly laundered clothes, spare batteries for his laptop and a selction of SIM cards for his mobile.

I am serious. If this guy is going to achieve his stated aim of doing the Jester Challenge next year and sail the Atlantic against prevailing winds and currents he is already on a steep learing curve. Let him get on with it.

I hope he has already learned a few lessons in this first leg. Stupid mistakes and a lack of preparation and anticipation which you would critisise if some old duffer in his sixties had made them. Just because his is a young lad every body goes all misty eyed and 'Go for it.... I wish I had done it at your age'.

I know I am in the minority but I genuinely believe that you are not doing him any favours.
 
Well I have anchored 1/2 Nm East of Pin Mill before (South Bank); holding fine. Plan dinghy trips with tide.

He has bilge keels though, there are a LOT of options if he dries out. I would be cheeky and dry out on the Tidemill Quay in Woodbridge. Supermarket very close! Train station.

In a Coribbee he can anchor behind Bridget's island for a week. Mile walk to Kirby-Le-Soken but totally protected and very pleasant.

Snape? - Not such a bad idea either - regular buses and I have yet to be charged there.

Finding Anchorages etc. Should have been part of the passage plan .. If he's doing it on Diddly Squat then he hardly needs to be near a pub or a CHANDLERS .. Let alone public transport .. IMHO .. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
As an old duffer in his sixties I am not above receiving help or advice nor recognising that many know more than I do about most things. Don't see why your 'sod him let him sink' attitude is necessary - if you don't want to be helpful then simply keep quiet.
 
Totally agree. Let's not let the ECF go the way of scuttlebutt gents if you don't mind. If the comment doesn't help then it's a waste of time and effort making it IMHO
Have had a great deal of help from those on here and willing to help anyone out where I can, but just because the lad may or may not have got things right does not mean anyone should pass judgement. Help out or don't bother replying if you please
 
Difficult one if he goes for this area as most creeks are deemed to be not overly anchor friendly, but if he does aim this way I'm sure we can find some. Ken might be able to help out with that
 
you could lend him that parking spot you found the other day!
jokes aside if he can drop the mast I can help organize a mooring with the Boston Motor yacht Club
can't wait to get down there myself

Not mollycoddling, but its getting harder to find anchorages, especially with facilities. They are not necessarily in the pilotbooks, and the locals on this coast can also benefit from this thread.

Things it has taken me 20 years to learn can be passed on - I have no need to hoard the info like a sacred scroll.

I am glad we are doing him some favours. I can tell you he appreciates it. That is the way of this corner of the Forum.

Good point about the mast though, if he can drop it my mooring is vacant and right outside here. Power and water available and well inland. Not an easy one but free
 
While I agree he's a bit badly-prepared, and has a lot to learn (which I'm sure he will, and quickly!) I don't have a problem with helping to make the trip a little easier.

The Wash is a bit sparse for useful anchorages, but either Skegness Yacht club (web page ) at Wainfleet or Saltfleet boat club (web page ) a bit further north would probably be more than happy to keep an eye on him/his boat for a week or so at little or no cost.

I'd be happy to speak to either for him if need be.
 
As Louise said before she went to bed, if it hadn't been for the help we've had from those on here we would probably still be dreaming about getting out there, so any chance we get to repay that help is one we're not going to shirk from
Wouldn't mind hearing more about these free anchorages myself, obviously /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think he is giving it a good go and anybody who gets the opportunity to help him on his way is displaying the sort of fellowship that may be unfashionable elsewhere, but hopefully still exists amongst those of us who go to sea in small boats.
 
I like to think that size doesn't matter, it's the attitude that counts. Personally speaking I have a small boat and nothing to prove to anyone, take life as it comes and get used to being kicked in the teeth often. That's the way I've had it for so long I can't remember a time when it wasn't like that. So if I can step forward and offer assistance to someone in need and others choose not to, well, everyone can come to their own conclusions.

I have a mooring in Alresford creek which is vacant and paid for, not so sure about facilities as it dries and a long walk to most places, you are welcome to borrow it. Mainline station within a couple of miles walk. Access to Liverpool st and stations in between.
Just up river Wivenhoe club pontoon on a first come first served basis dries into soft mud but all facilities available except electrickery on pontoon. Will do for a couple of tides but need to get permission if longer stay needed. All facilities of village.
Good to see ECF spirit triumph its why we're here. Ps logging info as it is the only way I can afford to get round too!.
 
If you make your way into the Norfolk Broads (is there a mast up route through Lowestoft?) you could find plenty of places to stop for free and plenty of pubs! Not worked it fully through - maybe someone with better Broads knowledge could advise.

BTW I am noting down all these free places to stop so please keep mollycoddling me! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
