Free 'All Tide' East Coast Anchorages

There is no where on the East Coast that charges for anchoring that i am aware of

I had never thought about how it works. I always understood achoring in the Orwell to be a "Right" but I never really looked into it. What would happen if one ventured into a mooring spot used by a sailing club or a marina or even a business, and anchored near an unused mooring thereby making that mooring unusable?

Great post Erbas. Thanks. Briefly I'll try and explain why. Going sailing... As I said; if you want to pay for the convenience - each to their own. Cruising is something that can set you free. It is the last frontier out there. We really shouldn't have to pay anybody once we let go of the mooring. Maybe its being idealistic but that is how I cruise. Hence why I think its sad that people are paying large sums of money as a matter of course, and why it is alarming to hear people are now paying to stop in a creek on a buoy, what next: a fee to anchor in a smooth area of mud.
This is a very interesting thread. The bed of the Orwell between Stoke Bridge and a point off Collimore belongs to Ipswich Borough Council who got their fingers burnt taking two sailors to court in an attempt to get them to pay twice for their mooring (ABP & IBC) and the sailors won. Now IBC seem afraid of enforcing their rights over the bed of the Orwell which is up to spring high water mark. Suffolk Yacht Harbour is dug out of the river bed so in theory it belongs to IBC. That should mean I can go into SYH and anchor for free. I am not sure about using their pontoons though as they own and maintain them but again they are on the river bed and in effect could be classed as an obstruction to the common law right to navigate and anchor on a tidal water way. I am of course thinking out loud but others views would be interesting. The same situation exists at Fox's and probably at Woolverstone too:-)

Poole Harbour thats exactly what happens.. Drop your anchor and a harbour board launch will come alongside and demand an anchoring fee. In Newtown Creek on the Isle of Wight, they ask for a "voluntary" Donation to the RSPB.....". We are still very lucky around here but sadly I wonder for how long.

Shhhhh!! Dont talk it up!

Think you pay in Beaulieu River too. But then those South Coast Yotties can afford it, not like us hard up East Coast Sailors.

This is happening on the Deben my friend!

I would ignore anything that asked me to sign away my "Rights". That is where many people go wrong on rights of way by declaring they have been given "permission" which is of course an admission that "permission" is required which it isn't and nor is it on a tidal waterway.

All the East Coast is free to anchor and with the exception of West Mersea, clubs don't charge a compulsory fee for using a buoy. I agree with Sailorman that Butley Creek is the best anchorage on the East Coast; all tide, all weather.
