Christ, that's a real shame after all that effort. Penmarche is such a 'miserable' Point too, always feels a lot warmer and nicer once you're round it. Adds insult to injury to pile up on the place!

Jeudi 7 juillet 2005 : 7h00. Quelques heures après avoir doublé (hier) le Cap Lizard (pointe sud-ouest de l´Angleterre), au terme de son extraordinaire nouveau record de la traversée de l´Atlantique nord en solitaire, le navigateur Francis Joyon, qui faisait route cette nuit vers La Trinité sur mer à bord de son trimaran IDEC, s´est endormi à la barre de son bateau vers 1h ce matin. Le bateau s´est échoué peu après sur les rochers à la hauteur de Penmarc´h. Francis Joyon a été secouru par les pompiers qui l´on emmené à l´hôpital pour une visite de contrôle de laquelle il est sorti rapidement indemne.
Le trimaran IDEC est lui dans un moins bon état et ne devrait pas pouvoir être récupéré selon son skipper. Francis Joyon : "Le bateau est sur les rochers et je crains qu´il soit impossible de le sauver. Il est encastré les étraves dans les rochers et le cul en l´air. Le mat est tombé il y a une heure et le bateau est en train de se disloquer peu à peu. Nous tentons actuellement, avec une vedette de la SNSM de le dégager des rochers, mais je crains qu´il finisse en 1000 morceaux, à cause de la houle qui rend très difficile la manoeuvre de sauvetage".

yachtsman Francis Joyon was was heading at night towards La Trinite
sur Mer abord his trimaran IDEC, asleep at the helm of his boat at about 1am. The boat was stranded shortly after at the top of Penmarc'h. Joyon was rescued by firemen and taken to hospital but
emerged unscathed.
The trimaran IDEC is in a less good state and is unrecoverable
according to the skipper. Joyon said 'The boat is on the rocks and I fear it cannot be saved. It is lodged in the rocks and the stern is in the air. The mast fell after an hour and little by little the boat is breaking up. We hope with the help of SNSM to pull it from the rocks, but I fear it will end up in 1000 pieces, because the swell is making salvage very difficult.

It was a few years ago, that with a similar translation I failed my French "O" level............... well done software, I don't feel so bad after all.

I too have translation software, but it always comes up with crap translations. For example the french says that Joyon fell asleep at the wheel, but the software translated "barre" as "rod". La Trinite sur Mer has been comically translated to Trinidad on Sea! Essentially however you can get the gist of the message from the software and sadly Joyon's conclusion is that the yacht, dismasted and on the rocks, appears likely to break up, he suggests into 1000 pieces. Fortunately Joyon himself is OK having been rescued by the Pompiers (which normally means the firemen, but I wonder if the same term is used for coastguards or lifeboatmen).

Re pompiers, yes it does mean firemen, but Les Pompiers are also the primary rescue service in France and get all sorts of people out of all sorts of danger in all sorts of places, even when combustion is not involved.
Barre strictly translates as tiller, but is also used as an equivalent to the English helm
