Having recently bought a boat built in France, and first registered there, we have now got a new SSR number issued, and the certificate too.
I guess that it is ok to leave the FRA sail number, or should we change that too?

It would not seem appropriate to use the FRA number, even if perfectly legal.

If you do not know of an original class insignia and number why not apply for a GBR number from the RYA ( free to members IIRC)

I dont know who issues the FRA numbers.

The sail numbers have no particular significance except when racing. A sail number is required by Rule 77 of the Racing Rules of Sailing, not by any intergovernmental agreement. The national identifier in the sail number becomes relevant in international competitions.

Having peeled my IRL number off my sails, I can tell you it leaves a right mess because of the glue that gets left behind. You might prefer to leave well alone.

I since splitting my main asunder have reverted to my No 2 main that has the original German Sail No.
Most new british boats dont even have a class insignia ( costs far too much ), The Belgians didnt seem to care last week

Thank you for answering the question that I was going to ask!
My present boat came with a barely used North Sails spinnaker that looks really beautiful. Unfortunately it has an ITA registration and five digits... on both sides. I have been reluctant to try removing them for fear of damaging the sail or leaving a sticky mess like you mentioned, so I shall let it be; I prefer to use the genniker anyway because I mostly sail solo. ;)

It's always better to have some form of identification than none. The CG66 form asks for a sail identification number to assist in searching. Just think of all these white boats and white sails

I have a boat with 4 sails which still have their German lettering - 2 mains an A2 Gennaker and a Code0. I managed to get new GBR numbers allocated out of sequence so all I have to do is alter the E in GER to a letter B ! Not so complex as other combinations! :)

The glues seem to vary between preferring the sail or the number. Last year's number change was a breeze, leaving a tiny bit around some of the edges which came off by dabbing with the sticky bit of the removed numbers. I'd try lifting a corner and seeing what happens.
