Went with HWMBO to look at a few boats at a brokerage this weekend and saw a Foxterrier. (We are trying to look at as many different boats as possible in the 18-22 ft range - and want something that we can use comfortably for weekends).

We really liked the Foxterrier but can anyone tell us if they all have the same interior layout? It had an amzing amount of stowage compared to alot of others we've seen, even had a chart table. On the downside HWMBO could only really have used one of the 4 berths, he is a little too "broad" if you know what I mean. It seemed that alot of space was used up by the sea toilet - so do all Foxterriers have a sea toilet or do others use that space for a berth.

Thanks

Ruth

I sailed with a fleet of four fox terriers last summer. they did all have the same layout with the heads in the forepeak, howevever, it was used for storage because I dont think there are any cockpit lockers other than the gas locker and petrol tank locker. Certainly all the boats I saw has an outboard in a well, which gave more storage under the companionway steps however there are obvious disadvantages with an outboard over an inboard engine, petrol over diesel and handling come straight to mind.

My introduction to sail cruising was in a Fox Terrier. They were home completed so I assume there maybe differences in layout.

The one I sailed had two main berths in the saloon plus two quarter berths under the cockpit. The heads were in the forecabin along with sail stowage.

The berths were roomy enough for me. The name bigmart refers to the size of my girth & nothing else. I remember spending one night, complete with, then girlfriend now wife, with both of us in one of the quarter berths.

The Fox Terrier impressed me as it is not only a fast little boat but it can handle heavy weather surprisingly well. We used to sail from Christchurch &often went from there to Cherbourg & Alderney. We also managed summer cruises that took in passages from Plymouth to Roscoff, the Channel Dufour to Camaret & Guernsey to Plymouth. The maximum wind we encountered was a recorded, at St Peter Port, Force 11 plus several 8's & 9's. The boat never faltered & took it all in its stride. I once remember setting out from Cherbourg in force 8 that forecast decreasing to get back for work on Monday. We managed to snap the rudder on that trip but thats another story.

She did suffer from weather helm & can tend to slam when falling off waves. The heavy lifting keel, 600Lbs. as I recall, does tend to rattle, in the box, frighteningly when this happens.

My only other concern would be to check out the balsa core deck which may be showing signs of water ingress on an older boat.

You'll have a lot of fun.

Thanks very much guys, really useful information. I know Steve can't get in either quarter berths ....... and if he did I have to start a new thread about how to get him out of there.

We are going to keep an eye out for other Foxterriers - this one was over our budget at £8,500 (it had quite alot of nice kit and a very good trailer) but we have seen some classifieds for others as low as £5,500 probably with no kit and a rusty trailer!! One thing we have learnt already is it takes time to find the right boat.

Thanks again - it's appreciated.

Hi.

If the Foxterrier is a little over budget, consider a Harrier 20. I think they are basically the same boat, just 2ft shorter? You should be able to find a good one for about £5500 and I would guess not much different down below. Good sailing boat. V.pleased with mine.

Safe sailing
