Looks perfectly feasible for a two nighter for 5 mobos but for walk ashore access, am I right in thinking the only spot is Mixtow? (think I've spelt that right?). Any pointers would be welcome...thanks.

Correct, but Mixtow is on the Polruan side well away from Fowey, but well sheltered.

I'd avoid Fowey if it's blowing from the SW as it's likely to get pretty uncomfortable off the town. There are plenty of visitors pontoons and Fowey is worth a visit, it's a beautiful harbour. Getting ashore by dinghy is easy, and there is a good water taxi service.

If you want to try something different, take your dinghy upriver to Golant half tide onwards, go under the railway bridge and moor by the Fishermans Arms. At high water the road will be covered so you could step out of the pub directly into your dinghy!

The pontoon at Beryls yard (where the lifeboat is moored) stays in all winter. Whether five mobos could lay there is a moot point.

This?

I had in the back of my mind that was only available for short stays and not overnight? Maybe that's just in the summer. Long time since I've been to Fowey, so probably all changed. Lovely place though.

Fowey is well worth the effort, Mixtow will put you on the wrong side of the river, at least for visiting fowey. Best bet is to use one of the visitors pontoons and the river taxi for shore visits, (Easter to October).
Fowey harbour leave a pontoon in all year iirc, harbourmaster is accommodating if you call ahead I'm my experience. It's only an hour from Plymouth from the east and Falmouth from the west so you have options and lJS is quite right, I've had a very unpleasant evening with a southerly blowing in.
Don't forget that we are not as sophisticated as you guys, no water or power hook ups but you can take on water on the harbour side short stay pontoon.
When are you coming down?

Still the case as far as I know. Two hours max, from memory.

Once about ten years ago I was there on a course out of season and the Harbour Master said we could stay on the jetty overnight - but I think he might have known the instructor and in any case I certainly wouldn't want to rely on it.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. I've done a bit of research on Fowey via Visit My Harbour and the harbours own website, also taken a peek on Google Earth but first hand experience is always best and where better to ask than here. We will need to be on a walk ashore as one of our group will have their dog with them and it looks as tho' Mixtow is the only viable option for this. The water taxi goes that far so we could make good use of that.
Nigel...this would be early to mid July. Still very much in the planning process right now and has to be discussed with everyone but Fowey is lovely and I've never been by boat before so it would be great to add it into the route.
I'd love to do Mevagissey too but that's a nono for overnighting...hey ho, you can't have it all.

I've got 2 dogs that always cruise with us and have never moored on the walk ashore pontoons in Fowey. There are at least 3 pontoons in Pont Pill, just off to starboard as you approach the town. There are steps on Penleath point that you can tie a dinghy to and walk dogs, and on the other side of the creek is a wide shingly beach which we often use to exercise the dogs, and there are some excellent walks on both sides of the river, both for humans and their canine companions.

If you really want to enjoy Fowey I would not recommend basing yourselves at Mixtow.

Pontoons are fine for a quick canine number 1,(as long as you have a bucket :) )
We visit regularly with our dog, (and cats!) and LJS is again quite right, at that time of year you will have loads of get ashore options and the buzz and comings and goings on the pontoon coupled with the proximity to the Town are well worth it.
If your friends are walkers you have some of the best walking in the area here, take the coast path from Fowey, west through Readymoney and on towards Carlyon Bay or cross to Polruan and its a brisk walk to the lovely Polperro...

Samms have a place in Fowey and a beach bar but Samms on the beach is the best. Every time we go there I dream of one day mooring in the bay and going to the restaurant by dingy but still no boat yet !! very jealous Lisa have a good time !! oh and Pinky murphys for breakfast

My apology for intruding into your thread about the delightful Fowey but I do not believe it is ok for dog owners to allow even No 1's on pontoons regardless of the bucket of water afterwards. If the dog cannot wait to get into a dinghy, just one of those things but I do not think this is on. We have 2 dogs that I take the trouble to get ashore from pontoons such as these.

I know it can be an emotive subject on these forums, but what is the issue of a dog peeing on a pontoon if it's immediately washed down with a bucket of water? We have been into Fowey and have spent half an hour or more washing the seagull poo off the pontoons. Can't stop the seagulls doing what they do, but the pontoons are hardly clinically clean because of them.

Oh and also have to disagree about Pinky Murphy's, used to be one of our favourite places for tea/coffee but have found it a bit scruffy over the past couple of years. For breakfast we love the Toll Bar cafe, lovely balcony looking out to sea and dogs allowed. Also wifi available, which can be a problem in Fowey.

Don't worry too much about the pontoon, mine is trained for transom bedtime ablutions; mind you a good strong blast of dog pee on the pontoon might blast off some of the seagull carp.

Strange what winds some people up....:)
