We love Fowey and we're regular visitors. This thread isn't about the moorings fees; that's already been done, it's about the cost of stuff in the town. Everything is Chelsea-by-the-Sea prices. We were in Fowey Fish recently and saw a bottle of Chardonnay, a nice bottle of wine which I would expect to pay £12 to £14 for in Waitrose. It was £25. The bread shop (Quay Lane bread shop?) does really nice bread but £3.50 for a loaf. I don't mind paying a bit extra in Fowey for stuff; it is an out of the way place and transport costs will be higher etc, fair enough, but I can't stand the current pricing strategy. So we buy all of our stuff at Waitrose, provision the boat fully an then head to Fowey. It's bonkers, we'd like to support the town but they need to be sensible in their pricing otherwise it's a Lose:Lose.

Cawsand, Polruan and Newton Ferrers all have sensible local shops which I am pleased to patronise. They've got it right.

:(

You may be right, but it didn't hit me in the face when we were there a couple of months ago. We had a decent meal at Sam's and the butcher sells quality stuff. The art gallery in the other direction seems expensive, but again, it sells better-than-average wares. The baker is the only place I can get decent splits to go with my Cornish cream.

Only last weekend we walked out of the shop in Fowey on seeing the price of a jar of coffee (all we'd gone in for) - almost exactly twice what we pay locally in Cornwall.

We were in Fowey recently for a few days, purchased nothing as prices silly  (apart from beers in the yot club) :encouragement:

That should be the rfyc. The RHYC is currently on my bad list.

Very sad, Fowey is / was my favourite harbour, but I last visited in the late 1980's when it was pretty much unspoilt.

Now I hear it has gone the way of Salcombe, and has yet to learn the harsh lessons of ' stuff that, I'll skip past ' which Salcombe did !

I read here that the prices change overnight if a cruise ship is visiting; while I can understand this in a way - and I think Cornwall is a source of good skilled people cruelly ignored by Westminster - Fowey will have to be very careful not to kill the goose which lays the golden egg; they are already deterring visiting yachts.

In high season I've found it impossible to get a B&B in Fowey, but off season I bet you'd get kissed all over...

The butchers is excellent as is the bakery in the high st, some of the best cakes I've tasted, and not over priced.

Come to the East Coast. Was in Wells-next-the-Sea yesterday. Bought some local farm free range eggs from the Deli, £1.70 for tray of 30!.

If you are staying in Fowey, one of the tricks is to moor on the pontoons at Mixtow Pill.
That way you escape most of the noise of Fowey at night.

You can then also
(a) get a basic but adequate hot shower in the car park toilet & shower cabins
(b) get a Full English breakfast or a supper at the liitle cafe that is at the top of the ramp to the pontoons.
(c) walk up the hill to the shop in the caravan park at the top of the hill, which has enough of the basic essentials (like bottles of wine) at reasonable (not yottie) prices.

We have been regular visitors to Fowey for many years and still enjoy visiting, however last weekend we spent one night in Fowey and two nights anchored off Polkerris . It's ideal in easterly winds and has a pub and a restaurant. We have also found the shops in Fowey very expensive, especially the fish shop, encourages one to catch your own!We usually arrive well stocked with food and wine.
