Re: Stand: S2408. nm

Alistair, I used to think the same when I began boating a few years back and used those things, but I now know that the right knot is cheaper and just as convenient, if not more so.

Re: Pots & kettles

George, you missed your vocation in life.....arbitration!
On a more serious note I've got a good business idea for the next boatshow. I'm gonna have a stand selling knots. A knot for every use. Doya think it'll catch on or die out like the rest of the seamship skills learnt over years and passed down the generations to be replaced with bits of injection moulded plastic!

There's a teeny problemette with this gadget and others like it; it fails to correct the fundamental error. Tying fenders to wire guardrails has to be one of the more lubberly habits out there in boaty land; don't do it!! It puts enormous strain on the stanchion sockets and you'll end up with deck leaks; water will drip on you in your bunk, you'll become psychotic and bring about world peace by assassinating Dubya...oooh,
on second thoughts, keep on tying them on the rails, proper job!

cheers,
david

Couldn't agree more. But, there must be a lot of lubbers out there, doing it all wrong. Mainly because there is generally sweet nothing else to tie them to. The only time a fender puts an unacceptable strain on a guard wire or rail, is when the boat is heeling over in the wind, and the fender gets trapped under the pontoon, and it heels over the other way. Correctly positioned, AND the right size fender, then that shouldn't happen. I have had to rescue my a yottie neighbour's boat in marina, because he had put then too low, and really they were too small.
No, strain or no strain, I've got to keep SWMBO happy- so it's the clips.

If truth be known, Arthur, She has done PB2, and learnt the knots, and knows how to do them.
