Daughter has a trip planned on a tall ship Tahiti to New Caledomia next June. I want to buy her some decent waterproofs but I am unsure about the grade to get her. I have the feeling that Ocean grade will be over the top for that part of the world on a !50ft boat and the context of a tall ship as voyage crew and probably Offshore about right but I really have no idea. The tall ship people are very vague about this and just specify waterproofs.
Any advice on this?

I'm another Gill OS2 user, but I wouldn't want it anywhere near a tall ship. Rust, tar, rough metalwork, wire rope etc etc - or maybe I've just looked around the low rent ones?

I'd take a look at the Decathlon stuff just cause so many people speak highly of it, but also Millets for North Face, Berghaus, Peter Storm etc.. And I'm not a mean parent, my kids have Gill too.

Something light to keep the tropical rain out ... its hardly the roaring forties...

Something that will still be useful when she gets home.

What I have....
Gill OS2.. https://www.gillmarine.com/au/mens/os2-offshore-mens-jacket.html
Quite light.... I just layer up under it as the weather gets colder...
I see they also do an OS3 these days that may suit.....

I'd go with Frank

I have expensive Mustos that I bought for HK and China Sea Races. I seldom wore it there and I have used it even less often here, though it can be chilly at night in the winter here. I prefer lightweight water proofs with layers, thermals or marino.

I've sailed on tall ships and good yacht foul weather gear is great for limited movement on a yacht and would be really cumbersome up a mast on a tall ship.

It has nothing to do with cost.

Give her plenty of toilet paper instead.

(A woman friend went on a tall ship cruise in the South Pacific and because the trip took a lot longer than they expected they had to ration the toilet paper!)

Totally agree with cheapo decathlon. I used exactly that when sailing to Tahiti. Was a couple of months earlier in the year but it honked with rain all round the area, we were arriving from Panama.

Had to turn back from entering Nuku Hiva and wait for the white out rain to have a break.

No wonder Tahiti is so green!

I did that trip a few years back on Soren Larsen. I would go for the cheap and cheerful, the main thing you need it for is the seas that wash along the deck and curl over the bows, they are wet but warm. did not find I need them much during the day it was the night watches when it can get colder. Also go for a set which have a durable outer layer there are lots of things to snag on. She will have a great time, Vanuatu was my favorite group of Islands. Decent deck shoes are needed, the crew normally go bare footed but they have tough feet. Make sure the shoes drain and dry quickly, dont think I ever used wellies.

As said spray jacket and trousers. I sail at 32 South and can go for seasons without thinking of spray jackets. I saw once a set of proper ocean wet weather gear. Owned by a sailor from UK. It was a great novelty. Never seen again. Certainly on a tall ship rain will be the only concern. ol'will
