I read a boat review recently which mentioned a formica cabin sole with simulated holly and teak wood stripes.

Does anybody know about this product? Is it good? Where can it be bought and is it stupidly expensive?

Thanks

Choice of Finishes. eg. Holly&Teak @ 50mm. Available from Kayospruce Ltd. cost about £85 per 8X4' sheet. Widely used by the boat building fraternity. and about2.5mm-3mm thick. NOT particularly slippery!! HTH

Why not just get some DIY laminate flooring? Easy to fit, suitable for bathroom/ kitchen use, widely available & a wide choice of colours/ finishes & quality. Also easy to replace sections should any get damaged when you drop your wallet.

Fit inexpensive polypropylene carpet. Never slippery. nicer on bare feet, can be washed if necessary, never needs revarnishing and deadens the impact of a wallet falling on the floor!

Some of the responses might have been more helpful had they been based on anything more than facile supposition.
The laminate you describe can be bought from Robbins Timber (www.robbins.co.uk), whose site has further info (and with whom I have no connection). It's a Formica-type laminate, although I've no idea whether it's made by whoever makes Formica. I've used it. It's attractive, durable, easy to clean, zero-maintenance and non-slip even when wet, and costs around £80 per sheet, about half as much as teak/holly laminate (also available from Robbins).

Fitting it to existing sole boards is within the skill of any competent handiman given a degree of care. A router is invaluable for edge trimming.

Having fitted this over the winter to my existing sole boards a router is essential - use it with a straight cut blade to rough out and then a laminate trimmer (the one with a roler bearing at the bottom) to neatly trim down.

Kayospruce is was cheaper source than Robbins before Christmas. Thickness is 1.5mm

Its not slippy, as unlike domestic laminate floor it has a textured finnish that is far less slippy than varnished teak and holly esp when wet.

Thank you for a useful posting. To the pedants out there, I apologise for the incorrect use of a trademark, (Formica). I should have known better, but thankfully there are some people out there who are prepared to help.

As you say, 'Formica' is just one form of Melamine impregnated paper, the same stuff as your kitchen work-top.

In the days before every chippy had a van load of routers, laminate trimmers, jigsaws, etc etc., we had no choice but to use hand tools.

These can produce a perfectly good job, while avoiding the screaming racket, dust, and for many people, the general anxiety experienced when using routers etc.

In passing, don't forget to brush and seal the edges.

Best wishes
