I have been advised by fellow forum-ites that the best wind generator (on the basis of reliability, cost effectiveness and power output) was probably the Rutland 913.

So, when back on the boat today, I measured how high I would have to mount the beast to clear the arch at the stern. The arch is 2m above deck level; with the radome being another .25m. The blade diameter of the Rutland 913 is 1m, so that would entail the generator being at least 3m above deck level. I have had previous advice that this is perfectly OK in terms of heeleng moment - but it would look b***y awful!
The other alternative which I have considered because it is lower profile, is the Forgen 1000. Have any forumites had positive (or otherwise!) experience?

I had a forgen 1000 but sold it after a year as the trickle was insufficient for me. That being said, I have seen ones mounted high on the mast rotating in much lighter winds than mine, which was on the davits. It might be for you but check the output curves in the brochure, remembering that the average windspeed is probably quite low (10-12 knots).

Or...

Or, if you'd be happy with the tiny output of a Forgen 1000, why not look at a Rutland 503 instead of a 913? And it's about half the price of the Forgen. But it all depends on how much output you need.
