well I give up with this new boat and its friggin toilets never had an issue with my old manual pump toilet

as you are probably aware I have just replaced all the pipes for both toilets on my phantom 40 due to a bad smell which has now gone thank god

PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS WHILST EATING :)

ok here goes sorry for the graphic description (we all have to go you know)

ok so got up on the boat today and as we all do I needed a poo so off I went for a poo in the port side toilet I have got into the habbit and instructed the family do not over load the loo so have a poo then flush away with no toilet roll in the loo then wipe and flush paper down separately which is what I was intending on doing but I never got that far as I tried to flush the toilet and it blocked up with nothing but poo in the loo gggggrrrrrrrrr

I don't understand why is this I really don't below is what I have checked

there are no kinks in the new pipe and it is in the same place as the old pipe and nice and flowing with no kinks

I have not put anything down the toilets except toilet paper the very cheap wilko stuff (max 5 sheets at a time rule) and human waste

the diverter valve is fully open

I had to strip the toilet to clear the blockage so I removed the black rubber pipe from the back of the toilet where it fits onto a straight connector that joins it to the new 19mm internal pipe I fitted a month or so ago, I then put the black pipe that comes off the macerator into a bucket and flushed the toilet and it cleared no problem so i new that this pipe and the macerator were clear.

I then put a wet vac over the new pipe I had fitted that goes to a u bend where it changes to 38mm internal diameter pipe and this is where the blockage was in the 19mm internal pipe. after a bit of a struggle I managed to suck some poo out the pipe and into the wet vac I then connected the black pipe off the macerator back onto the 19mm pipe and flushed the toilet and it worked again I flushed it over and over again to check for leaks etc etc with just clean sea water and it never gave me another problem so blockage removed

the thing is I have lost all confidence in both the toilets now and even the wife has said she will not even go for a wee in them now as she don't want to risk putting toilet paper down them.

both the macerator pumps are working but its like the suction system is not powerful enough to suck the waste away I know they work like an aeroplane toilet so what could be my problem both toilets are the same and have both blocked up over the weeks but I have managed to get them to clear by keep pressing the drain button but not this time

they were like it before I changed the pipes for new ones and I put it down to the old pipes being partially blocked but its still the same with new pipes

any suggestions welcome as its spoiling my boating as I got all mardy today and threw all my toys out my pram and we all came home and we were suppose to be there till monday night

cheers shawn

Doesn't bear thinking about and obviously spoiling what is a great boat. Time to put your hand in your pocket, get the pro's in and replace the lot. Painful but what's worse continuing with this horrible problem or let someone else have a go?

How old is the macerator pump?

Surely the output from the toilet macerator isn't 19mm, is it? Sounds v small for the connection from the toilet to the holding tank.

What else can be replaced no point in paying someone else to do it I will replace what needs replacing I am just stumped as to what the problem could be

could it be the macerator pumps are both knackered and not creating the vacuum that is required I don't know, I have stripped both toilets and both macerators are spinning but are they spinning fast enough ?????????????????

jimmy where the output hole is for the waste to go at the bottom of the toilet bowl where the macerator fits on IS very small I could not even get my finger through it

Then the black s shaped hose off that is 19mm internal that then goes to a straight connector that connects it to about a 1mtr length of 19mm internal pipe that fits onto a u bend it then changes size where is comes off the other side of the u bend from 19mm -38mm internal and this pipe goes to the diverter valve then either to the holding tank or the sea cock all in 38mm internal pipe

cheers

Gotcha. Is it a Jabsco macerator? There's a service kit available for them which includes a new impeller.

PS the inlet seacock was open, right?

seal on the lid works perfectly, and lid not distorted ?

Don't despair LB. We have all been through this, and made the bl**dy sytems work in the end.

You don't say which make/model you have, but to be rid of the problem I'd be thinking of replacing with Tecma loos, not cheap but the best.

jimmy that picture is not quite right my toilet looks more like a traditional one you would get at home with a large tear drop shape base and the macerator pump is all hidden inside the back

unsure if it may have been partly blocked with loo paper before but everyone is SO careful I just don't see how they can be so poor at discharging

here is a pic of the macerator pump

do you think the macerator is not creating the vacuum that is required ?????????????

That looks like a Jabsco switch. Not sure about a vacuum, normally the macerator just pumps it through the system. If you don't want to change the whole unit I'd be servicing/replacing the macerator. But if you want ultimate reliability go for the Tecma.

Hi Shawn, that's definitely a Jabsco pump. I'd have expected you to have a Jabsco toilet cos I think they were OE on Fairlines like yours.

I could be wrong on this, but I don't think the macerator toilets create a vacuum as such. Certainly the one in my boat has a clever design with the impeller and the chopper blade both on the same motor shaft; as the motor spins, the impeller pulls seawater into the bowl, and washes the contents down to the chopper blade (#16 on the diagram above) which then pushes the whole lot away down the output hose.

If the previous user had (a) put too much paper in (b) of the wrong [non dissolving] type and (c) not flushed it very much then that could have caused the blockage.

When you flushed the toilet, did plenty of water come into the bowl?

Presume you conducted a pee trial when purchasing the boat? Sorry :)

Is there a similar boat in the marina that you can ask to look at their setup (presuming it works) in case the previous owner has changed something for the worse

yes you may well be right it may not work on a vacuum it may just be pushed out so should my next step be a new macerator have they lost their umf

The impeller may have dropped one or more blades which would severely affect the pumping performance...I'd be inclined to replace the whole unit, often not much more than the pump. But I'll say it again, look at the Tecma.

I have a problem with my Jabsco macerator not priming properly, but I have 38mm bog to tank to macerator and 19mm exit from there. I have bought a service kit for about £35 which contains a 'wear plate' which presumably (hopefully!) is worn and why it won't prime. Maybe your macerator has one?

jimmy yes I think you are correct I don't think it does work on a vacuum after all it works as you say chops it up then pushes it down the discharge pipe

previous owner would not matter as I have REPLACED ALL THE PIPES with new none odour pipes costing me nearly £400 just for the pipe so all the pipes from the seacocks to the holding tank to the back of the toilet are brand new and only been used a couple of times

it seems like the macerator pump just does not have the power to push the poo around the pipes I am starting to think new macerators may be required but its strange they are both knackered at the same time but everything else is new except for the macerators themselves
