I am very much in favour of the Yachting monthly series of port guides. I have (almost) religiously dismembered my YMs so that I can put then into folders which I keep on board. I do have a bit of a problem in tha SWMBO threw a couple of YMs away before I got them, and then she tore some out which makes the edges untidy.

My request is that YM shouuld publish a collected volume of these harbour guides, perhaps arranged into sections, South Coast, French Coast and so on. I think there would be a market for such book.

Perhaps others have a view.

I agree completely having done similar and then SWMBO had a clean up and they've now disappeared. Could I perhaps go further and suggest a looseleaf book of laminates?

fit for navigation ?

just wondering , all those maps are clearly marked as not supposed to be used for navigation (can't remember the exact phrasing , but it's a disclaimer of some sorts)

only point I'm getting at is that they are useful , but they might be more useful with more complete charts.

I would agree with that....

..but with one addition.

Tje only slightly annoying feature of these splendid article - ST do a parallel version - is that they not only produce the glossy tear out card but a lot of additional & very useful (if not vital) information is also contained in the normally printed article that accompanies each edition. I found myself splitting the mag to get these out too. Perhaps the whole article could be bound into regional volumes?

One problem is

that they are not a comprehensive port-by-port guide as you move along the coast, so they could never replace a conventional, comprehensive pilot book. There is (as with anything printed) the problem that they can go out of date pretty quickly whether in essential matters or peripherals like the Dog & Duck now being under new management and much favoured by Heavy Metal cider-heads.

Nonethess, they are pretty, and often they almost resemble the ports they represent!

Good idea, perhaps something like the excellent "Atlantic Spain and Portugal" not necessarily so comprehensive but along those lines. Could be a copyright problem though I believe the Admiralty is pretty protective when it comes to it's charts.

Re: fit for navigation ?

The charts yes, but I used the very useful waypoints in an early version of this series to get into Paimpol for the first time and I think they're terrific. I do question whether they're necessary for places like Poole where access is marked like the proverbial barn door, for as a first time into the little places they're a real confidence builder.

As those before, I too collect these articles and find the aerial photographs of harbours particularly useful. I have about three years of them in folders and always sort out the ones which may be useful on my route before I set off. I hope someone does publish them in book form.
