For those of you who remember it when it was good, it had a buzz to it. Good fun when music was on, decent pub grub served quickly and good prices.

It became awful. And I’ve steered clear.

A year ago it got a new manager. She seems to have whipped it back into shape - smiling staff, good service (no - great service) and thoroughly good pub food.

It’s shutting in June (incredibly) for a refurb and the manager has plans to make it even better.

We went there yesterday for the first time in years and had a lovely lime.

If you’ve swerved it because it was rubbish, I’d put it back on your list. You may be pleasantly surprised.

(Disclaimer - no connection)

We went on on Easter Monday. It was lovely to be sat out the front in the sunshine. Food was OK, like you say not great, but it is a greene king pub after all.
We are not overly bothered by the menu, it's more about the ambiance of the place. And they do a good pint, what's not to like?

Love that pub and indeed the little slip next to it. The road down to it could do with a little work however ?

Do they still charge a bonkers amount to get the water taxi across?

been off the list for several years but will look again.

It certainly must be in need of some modernisation. It looked distinctly tire inside in the times when I think Alan ? ran the moorings and westerly were still building boats but the slip and dinghy park worked well although if you left your car in the field there was a risk it wouldn’t be there on your return from weekend sail. I think some using the field saw it as a pool of cars to get home. I never recall it being that welcoming inside to the discerning foodie though but for a pint it seemed fine as said ,however you can get a water taxi to cowes or walk to island harbour I guess.

Well this is encouraging. Have they upgraded the shoreside facilities (showers, WCs)...?
Until that's done we won't be overnighting there again. (or so I'm reliably informed by the present Mrs Scala)...
This was done in September last year. Just at the wrong time when the IOW festival was on.
But revamps at the incorrect time seem to be a thing with this pub. They apparently have a refit planned for June this year? And IIRC about 5 years ago they shut for the summer when GK took over!!

Yes. Out of the control of and to the frustration of the manager.

Our boat lives there. There's one manky sailors bog with a broken sink, use the pub toilets. Food fine, beer good, welcome very good. The ferry is £4 pp return, Dave will ask for 5he money when you get ashore, apparently drunk people are hard to get money out of. We coukd spend a fortune on that so always use our tender. It’s not the same as 20 years ago, that landlord now runs The Wight Mouse, in Chale.

Wight mouse is certainly worth a visit however mooring isn’t that good at Blackgang I’m told?however you can hire a small yellow tin can type car in cowes or risk the vagaries of southern Vectis.

Cycle from Yarmouth in an hour and 15. Or less than an hour from Newport if you can take to the ground. Would make for a lovely day.

But the point of this thread is to say if you’ve been avoiding the folly because of bad experiences - of which there have been plenty - then it may be worth giving it another go.

Very much so. Don’t nick my mooring though!
