Re: Gori

It is well worth checking out the galvanic protection. I have heard of one well known "prestige" manufacturer whose blades and hub are rubber mounted off the shaft. The main anode gave no protection at all and there was no anode either on the hub. Folding props are expensive bits of kit and it is well worth ensuring proper protection.

Re: Gori

Agree, however apart from the bump stops there is no isolating rubber on the Gori.
She also has a small anode on the end as well as protection via the shaft anode.
Usually the prop anode lasts half a season and after 8 years prop is as good as new in all aspects.

Re: Gori

yanmar say their saildrive warranty is void unless you use a rubber-bushed prop

the anode shouldn't really need to protect an isolated bronze/stainless prop

Your sailmaker is quite right, and, in fact, mine said the same to me at one time; bear in mind, it's not in his interest for your boat to do badly once he's flogged you a set of sails. My experience of handicap systems is that they don't give anything like adequate allowance for fixed props. Cruising World commissioned some trials of various prop configurations some years ago and, based on their results, I calculated that the difference in drag between a fixed two blade, a relatively small one at that, and a folder was worth roughly 4% of sailing time up to speeds of about 7 knots. That's a lot less than many people claim, but there we are. I haven't made any assessment of what the effect is in the surfing regime but it's bound to be bad. A 4% gain is not a lot, not worth it if you're only cruising, but hero to zero in racing (and, for example, the Clyde handicap allowance for a fixed 2-blade is only about 0.5%).

I changed to a Radice 2-blade folder about 5 years ago. It's adequate. We can still do 7 kts in flat water, the reverse power is ok, and that's with a high-revving 12" diameter prop; you'll do better with your bigger prop and reduction gearbox but I don't have that option.

See http://www.lakesterngear.co.uk/ for Radice prices. The props are plenty good enough and cost a lot less than the equivalent Gori.
