Foam backed vinyl-sticky mess

some petrol is already down my boat

Petrol fumes are very inflammable, even a small spark such as that caused by turning on a switch can cause a devastating explosion, take extreme care if using inside the confines of a boat, really not recommended.

- but if you really must, make sure the petrol isn't 2-stroke mix!

Indeed. I'd strongly advise taking a look at the flash points of acetone and petrol and comparing them with that of white spirit. I personally would not choose to use either - acetone can also be very destructive of plastic: see Nigel Calder's account of his unfortunate experience here http://www.marinemechanic.com/site/page69.html. As I said, white spirit worked for me, and it's available in low odour formulation. (And do bear in mind that the strongest contact adhesive may not have been used for foam-backed vinyl on ply - IIRC, if you search this forum you'll find many references to being able to use 'milder' adhesives for foam backed vinyl on ply.) Good luck - and go safely, whatever you use!

Had a bash at it this morning, hard work but didn't take too long.

After trying a few things, thinners worked quite well. Several applications with a rag, really wetting it on and letting it soak in for a bit then scraping off with a paint scraper. Some areas took a few goes but got there eventually, back to bare wood. A good squirt of cillit bang and a scrub cleaned the rest of the muck off.

Now I've just got to get the stink of thinners out of the boat :(

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone

Hawke House recommend a "face off disk" on an electric drill for large areas or an Auto Glym solvent for smaller areas - click on "Glue Remover" on the left hand menu on this page http://www.hawkehouse.co.uk/default.asp

These discs work but the mess level generated is massive!
I used a flat scraper, then wire brush to finish off. Don't bother putting anything else down until you are comfortable it's all dry. Blow a warm fan heater in there for a while!
Best of luck - it's a horrible job whatever way you do it !

I think the cheapest spray-on/wipe off solution for you is brake cleaner. Use a cloth not paper and spray onto the cloth and the board and it will take off the glue easily, may even break down the old foam too. Wear gloves though, as it will dry out your skin very quickly otherwise, and lead to dermatitis.

Doesn't matter which brand, they're all the same. I used to use it all the time for cleaning down caravan & motorhomes when cleaning up after resealing, glue removal etc,

Breizh.
