Foam backed Headlining

I used the self adhesive closed cell foam from them and it was as good as new 10 years later when I sold the boat. No messy glue, no foam deterioration, better insulation, foam was water resistant, softer feeling lining. Can't think of any downsides
We spent most of our time in the Caribbean. Temperature tries to kill the foam here and succeeds. We could vacuum clean the foam off the vinyl as it came away like dust.

Would youdecorate any rooms in your house with padded vinyl? Whydo it in a boat? The stuff is shit and looks naff, just get creative with ply, wood or pvc cladding or veltrim. You would make a great job of any of them, and it will look Much better.

That is one of the most odd comments yet on any boat forum/page YT i have seen ha ha.

Would you laminate a wall of Living room or bedroom, paint to cellar with bilge paint, a boat is a different and personal thing aswell as a house is. I am sure foam backed lining is better than wall paper on a boat, and folk do actually wall paper there boats.

And i think 12 years is not bad to get a lining to last for the cost of it.

I have a small area on the headlining on the cabin coachroof filling a gap between two areas of the main headlining. The main areas are painted ply and look very good, the area between is foam backed Vinyl. The foam has now disintegrated but the vinyl is good. The GRP has quite a reasonable finish (chopped strand mat), I was thinking of removing all the foam and cleaning the GRP and then stickling the vinyl direct to the GRP. Would this work? The edges of the Vinyl are trapped under the main ply panels.

You can do this, but the unbacked vinyl will show up every undulation , or irregularity in the fibreglass unfortunately

I renewed the whole headlining of my Westerly Tiger with vinyl cloth , MDF panels and thin battens. If you have a branch of The Range store near to you they stock the vinyl in 1.5mtr widths any colour/pattern you would like at a very affordable price and worth getting extra metres for other matching surfaces- (and errors}
The method I used was to remove the old foam backed and retain as a rough template of the ceiling, and the same when removing the cabin window apertures. I cleaned off the crumbled black foam with a stiff brush and vacuum. Before removing I marked where the panels would be flattest and edges unobtrusive, marking these as No1 - 6 plus the 2 side panels.
I purchased the thinnest MDF about 3mm in 4x2 ft sheets from B & Q and Gorilla Glue and a spray glue of the contact type for the cloth to panel. I also purchased some screw head covers and brass screws. The batten was 11/4" wide and 1/4"thick( I could have used MDF cut into strips for these)
I now cut the templates from the original vinyl cloth and allowed about 3/4" overlap on all edges. When cutting the new. I forgot to allow the thickness of the cloth and reduce the MDF panel size by about 1/8"on each edge for the overlap. Fortunately i realised this on the first two panels, The battens were glued to the deckhead and dried pretty quickly.
Each panel( some of course were slightly curved) fitted well .I took 5 days to do the paneling and 3 days to clear up the black mess from the deckhead and side panels. I did not panel or batten the side pieces for the windows on the sides which fitted well after lifting the frames slightly and sealing. The forward cabin was a n awkward job and , since not too bad, I replaced the side berth panels only with carpeting, adding some warmth there . I was pleased with the end result. cost about £80.

I myself dont see the point in foam backed linings. Best and easiest and well priced is the four way stretch linings as used in Camper vans etc, and more on boats now.

I just re-lined my forecabin with Campervan lining .... excellent - far better than the foam backed vinyl it replaced.

eBay has plenty suppliers who do package deals of lining and HT spray adhesive.

I too prefer vehicle carpet lining, live with it on one boat, replacing vinyl on the other with it over insulation (no fun removing decomposed ancient town backed vinyl)
