FNM Marine Diesel Problems: Diagnostics?

Update....from AFN

I had a pretty speedy reply from AFN as follows (I've corrected some typos!):-

Dear Simon,
if Your notice is correct (HPE 200), Your engine is an engine 5 cilinders common rail 10valves.
It is an old FIAT engine and it was mounted, for example, on ALFA ROMEO 156.
Some information for you:
*please check if the ECU leds are all on when the key is in ON position.
*If some led is off You need to check the fuse and if it is ok to have some problems on the ECU (SIMON: Ross checked all fuses: they were working)
*when the key is in ON position, the ECU manage the low-pressure pump (electrica pump) which feeds the high pressure circuit. In this case, if the pump does not work you have to check if it is ok. If the pump is ok the ECU has a problem because it does not run the pump, (Simon: Pump is working)
*the high pressure sensor is located on the rail, it reads the value of the pressure and the ECU comparing this value with the target value manage the electric valve, this valve is located on the high pressure pump
*the emergency stop switch is located on the ecu box
*we have a diagnostic tool that can read the errors and cam read the parameters (Simon: I have asked for more detail/costs of this)

Cordiali Saluti,

Best regards,

Ing. Giuseppe Cafaro

He was really just replying to specific questions which I sent, however if there is more that I should ask or if there are specific details which will help I will put those to him.....hopefully this is progress.

What about the comment of the Fiat/Alfa link: is there anyone you can recommend in this area?

Cheers all...

Simon

Progress!!

Looks like FINALLY making progress.

Had a visit this morning from a company specialising in diesels & in particular fuel injection systems. Managed to get some diagnostics running on the basis that he recognised the engine as a Fiat. Fuel pressure all fine, checked various things and like his predecessors could fine no obvious problem.

Long story short: there is definitely a poor electrical contact somewhere, as I mentioned that the starter alarm was sometime intermittent. We got the engine running perfectly...but when he 'wiggled' the bundle of wires going into the ECU it stopped. I then turned the engine over whilst he wiggled again...she started up!

At least the problem appears clear now: I have a boat electrician coming in hopefully tomorrow.......fingers crossed.......I may still make it to Henley over the coming days with my fridge WELL STOCKED!.....

good, so looks like you'll be home and dry (I wonder if one is allowed to use this idiom these days with the weather you're experiencing  )

Cannot be too much of a hassle to find a dodgy connection (doubt it's a short unless cable are clearly abused) What I try to do is clamp securely the two ends of the lot and wiggle in the middle, if it's ok, remove one clamp and wiggle the one end and vice versa. You'll eventually figure out where the problem is and work around it.

That's what I'm hoping. The chap who is coming over comes well recommended by the guys at the marina: all he does is boat electrics & electronics.

Fingers crossed.

I had a similar problem on a Perkins engine.

Jumped through more hoops than I care to remember... and the post regarding "stop switch is in the ecu"

My Perkins ran fine and when stopped would not restart. Faulty stop switch still in stop mode when it should have been "start" e.g. fuel on

So is the fuel getting to the injectors? If not .....

Hi ... Yes the fuel is getting through ... It's been so frustrating but my gut instinct is that what I've seen today is the root cause. We shall see in the morning!
