flying the Union Flag

Nope, there is a civilian version, see the link above.

Nope that has a white border around and is not true union flag and is no different to any other flag/ensign which contains the union flag/jack.

I think it is.
Yes, absolutely right.

Ho hum.

There's more previous threads on this than you can shake a stick at. Ex-SolentBoy is wrong. It's a criminal offence for a British ship to fly it. "British ship" is clearly defined in the Merchant Shipping Act. Most forum contributors who are British citizens sail around in British ships.

Whether anybody will bother prosecuting is another matter.

Not actually a criminal offence, but we can argue legality offline.

How come they get away with this in Cornwall?

The UK appears to be suffering from a bit of a surplus of Union Flags

It seems a shame to let them go to waste

where may I display them without incurring the wrath of my fellow Blue Ensign wearers?

At home.

The Union Flag is a Land Flag.

The Union Jack is a sea flag worn only by RN Ships. I have a small Pilot Jack (Union Flag with a white border) that I wear in the bows when I dress ship.

For the the Jubilee I followed RN Ships and dressed with masthead ensigns as well as signal flags. To do this I swapped from my usual underfaced blue to red ensigns as I have 2 of those from previous boats and only 1 blue!

Doh - gone and done it again letting myself get drawn into a flag etiquette post

Thrown out! I always thought it was a distinct advantage!

Not in my day '49-'50, it was then a criminal offence and in barracks a watch kept - one guy admitted homosexual experience and was ostracized as a dirty barsteward. Although the 'golden rivet' was a standing joke as also was Chief Stokers chasing junior stokers around.
