The UK appears to be suffering from a bit of a surplus of Union Flags

It seems a shame to let them go to waste

where may I display them without incurring the wrath of my fellow Blue Ensign wearers?


As a wind indicater at the top of the mast(penant)?

From the leach of the main near the top?

from the forestay while at anchor to celebrate a recent victory of some sort?

a large pair sewn together to make a colourful, boom tent?

Dodgers?

I assume I will not be allowed to fly one from the little stick on the back of the boat?

So you have taken to flying a blue ensign have you Dylan? Hmmmmmm, I wonder when you will trade in the old rag jobs and be getting yourself a smart new mobo?

Unless you are a warship I believe that it is illegal.

Mind Blue Ensign wearers will often shoot you down at the slightest transgression.
 
There's a UK registered boat a couple of boats up from us in Croatia who only flies the Union flag as its ensign. I've never actually seen anybody on board to find out why they do that, or if they are in fact British.

It looks wrong of course, but surprisingly grand.

It is not illegal.

Anyway, who cares what other people think about the bits of cloth you attach to your boat. The sort of people that complain about stuff like that are exactly the ones we should all go out of our way to wind up until they come to their senses.

I care what people think about me and my desire to demonstrate my patriotic fervour for all things Royal

I myself think it a great shame that Andrew is not going to become King

I think his dedication to golf and good times shows that he would be just the right person

and Eugenie and the other one have inherited theor mothers excellent taste in hats and clothes

their family could really put this country back on the map

I have not flown one yet but I qualify because my son once attended a topper open meeting at a qualifying club and we slept in the back of the car in the dinghy park and my uncle was thrown out of the navy for being gay

I think it is. A Union Flag should have a white border around it so as not to make a vessel look like a Naval Ship which flies the Union Flag at the Jack Staff.

Merchant Shipping Act:

4. Penalty for carrying improper colours
(1) If any of the following colours, namely—
(a)any distinctive national colours except—
(i)the red ensign,
(ii)the Union flag (commonly known as the Union Jack) with a white border, or
(iii)any colours authorised or confirmed under section 2(3)(b); or
(b)any colours usually worn by Her Majesty’s ships or resembling those of Her Majesty, or
(c)the pendant usually carried by Her Majesty’s ships or any pendant resembling that pendant,

are hoisted on board any British ship without warrant from Her Majesty or from the Secretary of State, the master of the ship, or the owner of the ship (if on board), and every other person hoisting them shall be guilty of an offence.

As I am going sailing I shall make on final contribution to this thread. It is NOT illegal.
Whilst your quote is true, it is not neccessarily applicable. Its all down to the definition of "colours", national flags, where you are, who you are and a whole load of other things.

There have been several very detailed threads on this with all the arguments. If you cant be bothered to read them I have no intention of making it easy for you.:D

I think this is the right answer

"Australian registered merchant ships should fly the Australian Red Ensign. Government ships, fishing boats, pleasure boats and commercial craft (less than 24mtrs in tonnage length) can fly either the Australian National flag or the Australian Red ensign but not both together."

The red ensign is the correct flag, but smaller vessels can fly either.

Dodgers and awnings aren't flags, so you have a free hand with recycling union flags that way.

I think Katie L will look very patriotic decked out like that.
