Flybridge redesign

Firstly this is a long term project, I don't really expect to do anything this season but since I intend to keep Seralia for a long time (7-10 years) I might as well get the boat the way id like it.

I know it wont add any resale value (after 10 years the boat wont have much value to enhance) but it will add to our enjoyment and will probably prolong the ownership period.

Here is the current layout:

Its a fairly big FB but by todays standards (or maybe just by british standards) poorly laid out. There is no possibility to dine up top, there is not wet bar, or griddle place (the big triangular module is a very shallow fridge) and I think it can be done better.

What id like to do is create a U shape seating/dining area at the stern where the current floor level sunpads are. There would then be an L crew seat forward of that on the same side. Ideally id like to replace the helm bench with proper seats (but realistically the budget might not stretch to that).

It then like a taller lateral wet bar/grill behind the helm.

unless anyone has better ideas.

That looks a lot better than the current arrangement. Will the seating have any fold down ability to make sun beds

That looks good Jez. My idea would be to move the existing 'L' shaped sofa benches aft and add a triangular table. Then either raise and modify the existing triangular fridge to take a grill, sink and fridge or bin it for an off the shelf rectangular unit like this http://www.nauticexpo.com/prod/beachcomber-fiberglass-technology/product-26787-445481.html.

But I think your idea is better.

I think the crew seat need to be further forward in line with the helm/navigator. The princess 52 layout would seem a good template

Yes, I'd put the table on a hi-low pedestal with new infil cushions

Do you mean extend the length of the seat to port?

That would get in the way of the internal staircase I think.

The forward facing seating on the port side would be better further forward in line with the helm seats. Sorry can't work out how to post an image of the 52.

Ah ok. I did wonder if that hatch was the stairs but couldn't see any stairs on the main deck plan.

A) I think that's probably too much work and
B) it would conflict with my internal stairs, which I use about 90% of the time.

If you look on the original plan, the lateral seat is set back from the helm bench to give access to the hatch.
The lateral seat in the redesign is slightly forward if the existing one but not by much, and is shorter to allow access through to the table

The stairs are very cleverly done. Not a full staircase but they are to port (outboard) of the lower helm.

Nice to have on a 50ft boat and I already wouldn't be without them

I'm not a motorboater'ist, but the helm position looks a bit out on its own... could you put in a bench/seat behind the helm so that it's more "social" if you want to chat with other people on the boat?

Underway the AP takes most of the strain. The FB tends to get used for socialising as I keep my speed to 8-10knts.
I get what you mean but I'm only really stuck at the helm for berthing. The rest of the time it's visiting to make sure everything is going smoothly

Hmm ,I think after a season or two -you will know how how the boat is actually used This will different to how you think it should /maybe used.A few thoughts ---

Eg you may find when it's busy in the summer the AP is redundant so a helm buddy and others facing forwards might be pref.

Even with a "unit " up there ,there's still a fetchme /carryme at meal times unless it's all duplicated .

How about a cockpit table downstairs -erh in the shade .Rolley anchorage in the Baldricks ? Eat downstairs ?

With guests /teenage girls with a bit of "body image " a seperate space to sunbath /sleep is good away from mum and Dad -as it is now
Also while it's nice to forward plan with a new boat to you -hold back €€€ in year one to try and get a handle on the real cost of maintenance /repairs
Yup nice academic excercises for now .

another idea,

get rid of the triangle module, and place a small new cupboard with fridge and grill against the Starboard "side wall"
leave the benches, and add a expandeable / foldeable table,
add a few foldeable chairs style Directors chair,
on the drawing it seems that the space for this is on the edge, but worth trying

I would keep the empty stern space and place a few nice sunbeds

imo this kind of removeable sunbeds and chairs give a "bigship" feeling
contrary to a arrangement with fixed benches everywhere

I'm not a fan of a big grill and wetbar,
this is good on a big boat where you have loads of space,

all this can be done for a small budget, and some of it could be done and tested this coming season....

I would do this but would add an option for the forward L-settee to become a sun-pad, if not making it a fixed one with middle back-rest which you can move-remove-rotate.
You are in the med flybridges are also used for sunbathing as Portofino pointed out.

Jez one other thing even though everyone here thinks the aft C or L-shape settee on the flybridge is something coming from Fairline, as far as I know the first boat with that design was the Ferretti 53 launched in 1997. Outside Ferretti, I think Fairline was the first to adapt this system on the 46 Phantom, and then on all the Phantom and Squadron series.
