Hello all, this is a newbie question. Just bought a flybidge, not used much previously, and flybirdge port engine control wont move, cabin position control fine. Checked out DS unit and some movement on cable seen but the lever feels jammed. In fact all engine controls feel stiff and wooly, which does not contribute to my novice helming without a keel or rudder! Any suggestions please. Thanks Nic

Work methodically. Start off at the helms. Pull the clevis pins and make sure the levers move freely. Basically check all connections and levers and check cables move freely. If the Movement is whooly check that theres not any tight bends in the cables which will cause stiffness.

dont mess about, replace the cables from the flybridge, check the levers on the bridge without the cables attached - sometimes the levers jam up as well, but can normally be freed off without any problems. I have to replace my cables about every 5 years anyway to ensure smooth response.

Nic,
I had the same problem a few years ago.
I agree with all that hasbeen said already. In addition, I advise some 'high spec' cables which have a tight bend radius. Make sure you get the correct length. Keypart sell them.
Correct adjustment is also important
If your DS unit is the same as my last one (Volvo), the alignment procedure is to insert 8mm dowels (I used bolts) into 2 holes on the DS unit face plate. This locks the unit in nuetral. The gear selector (butterfly type plate on the outdrive) should be exaxtly horizontal (neutral). Adjust the cable for neutral, and ensure that the backlash is shared equally between Fwd and Rev. Now lock off the adjusters on this cable, - you shouldnt need to move this again. Remove the dowels, and adjust cables for correct lever operation.
This sounds more complex than it really is.
Hope it helps. Good luck

Regards

Alastair

I had the same sort of thing and simply greased with a good teflon type grease in a tube the bits where the cables meet the engines. An instant fix whereas using WD40 and other oils just didn't last.

I'm no expert but it worked for me
