flot distance

what is the reasonable distance youexpect on a flot?
my old man went on one this september and one journey with 2 people aboard a 36 footer was 30 miles

now admittedly he could not work the autohelm which would have taken the strain
but he was a bit peeved as it was all to windward and the other boats were 45 foot, his brother was has motor day boat in jersey but so could helm fine but not point the best so they lost a bit every now and then


i have done a few flots and 30 miles would have done more than half a week on most,
they ended up lunch on the hoof most days and knackered every night
his brother lost a stone though and their taverna bill was bugger all

the flot had no plan to start with when booked but was ''left to the team''
seems some hardcore mile builders carried the day

it was german run and when the old boy mentioned lunch stops he was told the other boats were here to sail

Did 20 miles on one, it was optional though, there was a nearer destination for sane people.

This was way back and I was crewing for my dad who insisted on sailing the lot despite the dead calm, after 6-8 hours drifting at 2 knots even his iron will collapsed and the iron genny was hoisted.

Flot's should be fun rather than a lengthy slog, that was just painful.

Thirty miles? In a thirty six footer? Over a whole day? Even in my little Jouster that's an afternoon's sail.

Totally insane distance! If you went that far in the Solent you'd fall off the edge.

I think the OP is referring to how many miles a charter flotilla might achieve in a day.

Most of the distances we did were 10-20Nm ... we did one 35Nm - all under engine as no wind .... the bummer was that we (the flotilla) started at lunchtime because the lead boat skipper couldn't get his arse out of bed ... so all the boats ended up getting in after dark ... we were fine as we'd taken some emergency food which I cooked on route ... could've done it on the engine as it was overheating!!

I once had a long day when I went "share a boat" with Sunsail. We did Patitiri on Alonisos to Linaria on Skyros, reportedly 45 miles.

There wasn't much wind as late as it was in the season so we knew to gun the engine and get fairly close then we could sail the last couple of hours when the wind got up about 15:00.

The forecast was pants so we went back to Skopeos the following day, surfing down waves @ 10+ knots with ½ the jib out was good fun.

He was lucky they had an autohelm - 35Nm at 5 knots was no fun - we took it in turns to read or helm ...

Has your dad considered buying a boat to sail at his own pace in lovely UK waters?

I reckon four or five hours' sailing with time for a lunch break and a swim in the middle - so maybe 20 miles? Once had to do about 35 miles under power, to get close to base on the penultimate day of a holiday, but that was our choice really, because we wanted a leisurely morning and a quick sail the next afternoon, before we had to give the boat back.
