Flooded petrol engine

I am being driven to distraction by the fickle nature of the starting on my engine. This is an old but just re-built Volvo MB 250s. The recommended full choke and half throttle (when cold) sometimes starts the engine first time - at others it just floods the cylinders with petrol which is not easy to clear. I suspect that there is a knack of just the right combination of choke/throttle etc but I have tried many with no answer in sight. Does any one have any bright ideas?

I assume that the ignition timing and compression is up to spec.-Checking these might be in order anyway. The advance/retard mechanism could be the problem. Try retarding the ignition slightly (mark the original position so you can go back to it.)After that why not try half choke for your first effort--once you get the ritual that it needs , write it down and stick to it. All a bit trial and error I'm afraid.

Good luck

Check the float level , needle valve and throttle spindle
If your float level is incorrect then flooding will occur also the same with the needle valve .
The throttle spindle although not a major factor re starting would be more an indication of wear in your caburetter .
There are a few more tips on my web site

Agree with other suggestions. How does it run once started? Check the colour of the spark plugs after a decent run under power. If they look dark or black you could try a hotter plug. It's also worth checking out points, coil and condenser, it might be an ignition related rather than mixture problem. Worth checking air filter (if fitted) and also battery condition.
