Yep, no problem at all - was there a few hours ago.that road is high up side of valley. No other roads round there closed. Only the Henley to Wargrave road is closed, and that is actually passable.

Not sure what the situation in Shiplake is

Sorry Brendan but Bushnells flood reading will inaccurate because the Lock at Marsh is in the middle of refurbishment which is causing it to hold back a lot of water that would have normally fallen over the weir. This was already a bone of contention by Wargrave denizens even before the floods arrived.
The floods although bad are nothing like those of 1947

When Bushnells said it was as bad as 1947, that was the flood 2 years ago, when no Marsh refurbishment.

He'd lived in the same house since birth, so was talking through personal experience

Still Afloat !

Been down the marina this afternoon and my boat fine cos on floating pontoon but scene around Chertsey bridge and Thames is pretty dramatic. River flowing VERY fast. Thought this picture might bring a little light hearted relief........

I have every faith in Paul Bushnell he is after all a Queens Waterman but I dispute the 1947 statement. This year is the worst I have seen it, two years ago was bad but not as bad as 6 years ago. Locals around here say that this is the worst they have seen it but it still doesn't compare with 1947 when my house was an island and people were rowing down our village street. Two years ago the river didn't flood the grounds of the UTMYC which is above Bushnells, Bushnells remember have been extensively re-modelled and I would suggest that the proverbial lie of the land has been altered too, for a start the housing estate behind the yard wasn't there.

It just seemed an interesting piece of folklore from someone who lives and works on the river. That he was willing to put it in writing and send it out in a newsletter to all his clients indicates he thought so too.

Re: Byron

Its quite simply done by springing the boat. If she tried to drift over the bank the crossed lines would act as a net holding her midships braced against the mooring posts.

Yes! Well! what can I say other than the facts don't corroborate his newsletter, furthermore I don't see how he can remember 1947 because he is too young and I reiterate the lay of his land bears no resemblance to what it was then and is considerably lower too. I have now looked at local records and they do not substantiate his claims. I have telephoned two Watermen older than him who both state the floods are not a patch on 1947.

Bleedin ell Byron. What's up?

I'm not argueing with you or your facts! As I said, I simply repeated something I read in a newsletter 2 years ago. Seemed interesting at the time, and seemed relevant to the current thread!

Lets leave it there shall we.

Interesting points from all here. Got a letter from Harelyford about the sate of things, they are saying it's worse than 30 yrs ago, can't comment on that point but 2 yrs ago is nothing on today. I was on a mooring b 4 that I couold walk to in about a foot of water, can't getr anywhere near the same morring today - there is a river with strong current floowing throught the marina. trust me, go take a look for yourself, if you know the area it's worth a look.

I was speaking to Brian, the Lock-Keeper at Whitchurch, at lunch-time today. Levels there didn't reach 1947 level but apparently got near it. He still can't get to his house, except by boat. Measured the level at my mooring at Purley - that was at least 2.5ft higher than 2 years ago
