Flo-jet bilge pump - won\'t pump

Does anyone have experience of a "Flo-jet" diaphragm bilge pump which won't pump. The inlet pipe is connected via a 3/4" plastic fitting with an o-ring. The pump runs and will pump out water if the water is poured in but it won't prime itself and pump, even from a low head. Presumably it is sucking air but no amount of sealant or PTFE tape solves the problem. Any help gratefully received

Have you put in a new diaphragm?

These seem to be the weak point on Flo Jets.
