flexible gas pipe dates

Re: FMEA on LPG gas pipes

If you make, or treat yourself to a manometer you can test for leaks daily if you so wish... 10inches for 10 minutes would exceed the spec I believe ( but would be happy to hear if I were wrong)

10inches for 10 minutes

[/ QUOTE ] Wouldn't like to rephrase that would you? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Depending on the test it is air at 70mb, propane at 30mb or butane at 20mb and no discernible pressure drop in 5 minutes. (note the tests with gas are a little below their normal working pressures while the air test is well above)

I really don't understand why there's such a debate about this.

The hose costs peanuts a metre when compared to the general cost of running even a small boat. We simply buy one metre each year which does the regulator to gas bottle, and the cooker gas-cock to cooker perfectly.

Ok, some runs on other boats may be a bit longer than that but, even so, considering the attendant risks and the potential problems with insurance in the event of an accident, is it really worth NOT doing? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Fair comment Jerryat, which is why I went to buy some more - it was when I saw the 2007 date stamped on it that made me stop and think.

Now that others have confirmed that european stuff is different (as I said, I have 2008 on board), I am happy to go back to the chandlers and buy some.

thanks to all for the advice, as usual.

FWIW In Portugal the date is the obligatory replacement date. Nose or matches? You jest. sir. A guy writing in WBF about living on a boat, had a fire and was hospitalized with burns. He got up went to light the stove for coffee--BOOM. He smelt nothing. Much later the cause was found to be a pin-hole chafe where the copper tube exited the gas locker. It had been `grommited´ but that had split.
I´ve done quite a bit of gas installation and always use washing up liquid/water bubble test.
Here in France the household pipe is single skin rubber dated(as said) for replacement. I check it every time I change the bottle as I doubt the quality.

Refering to an earlier thread. In portugal all copper connections must be hard(silver)soldered. No joins or T´s can be hidden (i.e. in walls) No compression fittings allowed, all other connections are rubber gasket spigot/nut.

In Portugal

[/ QUOTE ] So you replace your gas hose here in the UK with some dated 2007 fine, this summer you go to Portugal and hey presto your new hoses are considered out of date?

Your gas system has been assembled in the UK using compression joints becase that is what is stipulated but when you get to Portugal it is unacceptable?

Vic, I was refering to the rules regarding domestic systems there. Included it as a contrast to the standards in UK out of interest. I have never heard of any boat inspections carried out. Also I think there is an EU rule that one country cannot enforce it´s regs on boats, cars etc. reg. in another EU country. The one about carrying 2 warning triangles in Spain comes to mind.
The Portuguese gas regs came about partly as a result of the roasting the British papers gave them over tourist deaths from CO poisening from badly installed gas heaters a few years back. Far more people die every year in UK than ever did in Portugal, but that didn´t stop the papers. The ST in particular had a vendetta going.

Thanks for clarifying that. Not that i am the slightest bit likely to be in Portugual with or without a boat!

Interesting that they say silver soldering. So logical but I am pretty certain that joints in my house here are soft soldered both those done when the house was extended ca 1979 and those done more recently in a new kitchen installation.

[/ QUOTE ]Having done it the other way or around, ie brought boat from Spain to UK, I now have gas pipe on board whose date suggests it hasnt even been manufactured yet ! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

it is definitely glossy bright orange with 2008 printed on it - I checked this morning for reasons of my own sanity.
