Am about to buy quite a few. Don't particularly want to walk out of the shop clutching the last of last year's stock so what should I expect by way of expiry date? Any answers gratefully received.

The flares should have both date of manufacture and date of expiry printed on them. In Canada they are valid for four years, in the USA for only three years. Not sure about the UK.

Have a look at www.allgadgets.co.uk ( I have nothing to do with them ). They sell Pains Wessex flares at very good prices. They aren't the latest dated versions but have half the service life for one quarter of the price - £2 for a handheld red flare can't be bad!

Note that the so-called expiry date as printed has only the remotest relationship with the ability of the yacht flare to work when required.
