If you're new to flares you'd be well advised to do the RYA Sea Survival course where you will (should) learn how to use the various flares. There is a technique for launching parachute flares for example

Do any courses include firing a parachute flare? My local outfit regularly stand in a corner of the yard setting off hand flares, but parachutes are a lot more susceptible to false alarms. I've been thinking of doing one of these courses; if any of them let you play with rockets then they might be a preferred choice!
