Any suggestions for what to do with them? Two sets of out of dates which came with the boat and no prospect of identifying let alone returning to chandler. Starting to look pretty old and becoming an issue. I can get to preveza and levkas if there are opportunities to dispose there...

Grateful for any advice,
Mark

"Put 'em in the marina bins"
Advice given to me by a local.

Pretty much what everyone does. Greeks don't give a toss about the environment anyway. Old paint, aerosols, noxious chemicals, old antifoul, it all goes in the bins. No doubt there's an environmental, health and safety timebomb of a landfill somewhere on the island.

I think we all know where the one on Lefkhada is situated!

Good morning:

I have often seen comments to the effect that this forum has many very knowledgeable members so maybe one of them could explain why people with old flares don't just dump them overboard when in deep water. If not leaving the marina/harbour I am sure that someone who was leaving would be willing to take them and chuck them overboard in an appropriate depth.

I am sure they will sink and I can't imagine a situation where fish will mess with them causing themselves injury.

I have no idea as to how long it will take for them to decompose but after seeing the amount of garbage on the sea bed locally I feel fairly sure that a few flare in x meters of water will not amount to much.

I quite agree about dumping them at sea. There are some very deep holes (2000m +) just south of Corfu. Putting them in marina bins could be why the Lefkas tip seems to catch fire on a regular basis.

To some, who consider the environment a sacred temple, you have violated the deity of mother earth!

Somebody put a old fire extinguisher next to the chemicals container in our marina. A mechanic found it there and wanted to “Play” a bit with it. He directed the thing into the container and pulled the trigger.
A dull bang, the guy disappeared in a white cloud. I found him lying on the concrete, broken arm. We later found the extinguisher 100 yard further in the harbour.
The extinguisher had a bad weld at the bottom due to standing in seawater from time to time. Pulling the trigger pierced a co² cartridge, putting pressure on the extinguisher. The bottom popped out, launching the extinguisher as a rocket.
That was a long time ago.
During my recent walks on the beaches here in Greece, I found two extinguishers. Probable from a sunken boat. Mailed the local coastguard to tell them the location. No response. For the wage they earn they wont lift a finger, let alone clean up some garbage. Some kids will find them.
Deserted beaches are full of dangerous stuff. Last year I found ammunition, grenades in a bay on the island Dokos. Must have been in the nets of a local fisher, he just dropped them next to his boat in three feet of water.
In Greece, best to drop the flares with the local fire station. They will play with them at Easter but when someone gets hurt, they know what to do.

Good afternoon:

The English language is a beautiful language which one does not recognize until one runs into examples and begins looking for the meaning of certain words:

em·bel·lish [ em béllish ]
beautify something: to increase the beauty of something by adding ornaments or decorations
add false details to something: to make an account or description more interesting by inventing or exaggerating details
add ornamentation to melody: to add extra notes, accents, or trills to a melody to make it more beautiful or interesting
