Flag halyards to the spreaders.

I need to replace the flag halyards to the spreaders, One is M.I.A. and the other has succumbed to UV and wind. (They were some sort of nylon braid / paracord by the look of it)

Any recommendations for halyard materials? UV stable and sensible price?


I see Force4 has (in 2mm @ 0.35p / m):

2mm Dyneema. Less inclined to stretch and go sloppy in a wind, and in these sizes it will behave itself on a cleat.

Mine are polyester, as were those on my previous boat, and they must have been 15 years old. Stretch isn't much of an issue for a flag halyard, even in Scotland

Local DIY shop ... 2 or 3mm Polyester ... nothing special ... you could even do red - port .. green - stbd !! Mine as Stemar have lasted far more years than I expected ..

One item that I have come to like ... instead of halyard going to mast - I've 3D printed clamp on cleats for the mast stays .. I tried the 'chandlers' version but they were completely useless ... Using these saves drilling / fixing cleats to mast ..

Any old polyester stuff that is braided. It is not as if it were critical or too expensive to replace.

I think the last time i bought some, it was 2mm paracord from ebay. Cheap and available in multiple colour options to suit any preferences. The boat was sold a few years later and the lines were still up!

One of my pet hates is multiple lines to one cleat - I use cleats on the mast stays for my stackpack lines.

Funny enough .. picked up a reel of 20m braided to replace a halyard line yesterday - it got caught during dismasting and broke ..

Cost .. 3 euros.

I don't have a 3D printer ....

Literally same as what I print .... but I have a choice of both ends being like yours - standard cleat .. or one end being a ring ....

I use a type of climber's knot on a shroud (rather than a cleat), but unfortunately I can't remember the name of it! Having had a quick search online, it might be a Klemheist Knot? I attach the flag halyard to the loop. Surprisingly it's still holding strong after several years and changes of flags. (Saying that has of course tempted fate for this season!! )
