It was idle curiosity that made me trot along the pontoon the other day to watch You berthing.

Yes, I was surprised. Usually it involves lots of shouting and prayers to any available deity.

But I try to make sure the other ranks don't see me panic.

Reminds me of some advice I was given not long after I first reported to my regiment. I was sent on some errand and with the keenness of youth I started to run. "Don't run, Mister" the adjutant shouted, "It panics the troops."

I also learned that a walking subaltern was easier for the soldiers to get new officers into 'saluting traps', that quickly removed any ideas of superiority we may have had and made us settle into a relaxed regimental life that did not rely on expecting hard working soldiers to salute all the time.

I am quite warming to Twinscrew for the pleasant memories his posts have brought back.
 
Ok. Guys I get the message, my next step was to have MC on a 252 with a couple of weeks in a small room at Aldershot, (he knows what I mean) yes MC I reckon we would rub along ok if we were to meet, as you say, memories of the old days in rig are priceless. at least you wasn't a 20 mile sniper (Oh dear how many artillerymen are going to slate me ?) Anyway I withdraw from this p*****g contest as it is getting boring now, I repair to the virtual bar and stand everyone who has contributed to this glorious p******e a pint.

There is one drop short on here who uses his regimental badge. There's also a donkey walloper if you want to go for the set.

Just to add to the boastings of first day afloat.

My first trip was in the Manchester dry docks work boat with my Dad around the Manchester / Salford docks in 1946 :eek: when I was 8.
If I had known about flag etiquette what fun I could have had, the place must have had some 100 or more ships in there RN and NM.:D

1954, fairhaven boating lake lytham!! Even had sailing dinghys there!! Learnt to sail one, age 5, wiv me bruv. Both still sailing. They were lovely clinker dinghies, dont know who built them, but wish I had one now.

Yep, I was on there with a mate. It was blowing a gale. He grabbed the rudder, rammed the bank and jumped off.

I carried on, on my own. Dunno how old, maybe about 12.

Used to love it there, later, save paper round money, cycle up from Preston, and sail, dreaming of sailing away from Preston docks to see the world!! lots of pirates on the lake and islands of course. Happy days!
 
Think it was the same time. We cycled there from Bacup 40 miles away. On me sit up and beg sturmy archer bike.
Blew a gale and rained in buckets on the way back. Me mate got his mother to pick him up from Preston.
