So I want to make sure my radio works we as we will be at sea a lot this year , we only have one aerial , why do some have two any tips welcome .

In the USA you often see Sportsfishing boats and yachts bristling with aerials - often two or three (or more even) VHF aerials, and then all the others.
Maybe you could fit another fixed VHF (with another aerial) as a back up?
Also useful if you want to monitor two channels simultaneously.
Or buy a good hand held VHF as your back up?

Cant we go back to the old days like on your previous boat where you didnt have a fixed radio at the FB? You could hear me on your handheld but I couldn't hear you. It was a perfect setup ?

Roy, if your aerial is over 5 years old just renew it
For what they cost
Your fixed set will rarely go wong
Its the 'spike' and the connections that deteriate first
A handhed is a must anyway, Coastgaurd will hear you on one if the whatsaname hits the fan
Elecution lessons might be agood idea too!
:D

I'm all for the handheld too. Within 5 minutes I'm so far ahead it doesnt have the range to reply. If I need to keep in coms distance I can simply ride in circles round his boat so he can verbally communicate (30 secs in)

I remember coming through Bardsley sound and you were that
far behind I radioed the coast guard to see where you was I then realised you would be looking for your fridge .

That was Coastwatch NCI and they were trying to chivvy me out so they could give the green flag to some naval gunnery practice. Trust you to do a runner and leave me holding the can!

Some boats were supplied from new with a second aerial that looked identical to a VHF marine antenna.
It was in fact a receive only aerial which supplied signal to the FM/AM music radio.
It was made to look the same probably for aesthetic reasons.
Originally had a sticker on the base identifying it as a receiving aerial only.
Suspect over time the labels have dropped off, folks are assuming it was a VHF marine antenna and connected it to a marine radio and then wondered why their radio was not working correctly.
