Fixed or Handheld

definitely get a fixed one - preferably a DSC with the big red "Oh S*** - get me out of here!" button on it. Better range (@ 40 miles), not going to get dropped overboard, doesn't need batteries. ICOM stuff is very good.

Thanks for the info, it will be only a few miles off shore. I'm looking at a MIDLAND ATLANTIC HANDHELD VHF RADIO as a handheld or COBRA MR F55 DSC VHF RADIO for fixed. There is only a few quid difference between the two.

Cheers

I had a midland for a year, then I threw it in the sea. I'd never ever made contact with anyone, even from 50 yards away. I've got a Standard Horizon now, which gets enough results for us to go and use the big set.

I bought the COBRA MR F55 DSC VHF RADIO a few years ago to run an event - round the Isle of Wight.

Great little set - worked better than anything I've ever used.

Still got it - fitted to my dinghy.

However, if I were buying now (for my own use) I'd but a Standard Horizon and as some say above - one of each - a fixed and a handheld - they both have their uses.

As others have said, definitely get a fixed set. By chance, I've got a Cobra MR F55 (EU) brand new in a box. Completely mint, never used, never taken out of box, everything sealed in the box, just as new, complete. Approx 18mths old. I was going to put it in the tender (a la Hurric!) but have gone off the idea so it ought to go to a good home rahter than gather dust with me. You're welcome to it for 50% of the best price you can find one for in the shops. It's only the Cobra set complete, I don't have an external aerial to go with it so you'd have to buy that, but then you would anyway. Colour is black (they come in white too). I'll post to you for free (I'm in London). If you want it please tell me the price and delivery address

I could not raise Holyhead coast guards in holyhead harbour on the hand held, when a shout went off. Please dont tempt him to go hand held.

Hi jfm

PM Sent !

Nice one, cheers

Stu, It's heading west along the M4 on a delivery truck to you, as I type :-). I might be telling you how to suck eggs, but you need to register on-line with ofcom and get issued with a MMSI number and call-sign, then you key the MMSI into the radio set, then you're all set. Don't "not bother" doing this, because it's essential if you need to be rescued! Likewise, connect the radio to the NMEA-out of your GPS set so it transmits your lat/long; again this helps if you need to be rescued

HLB, you may have mis-read my post above. I have sold him/encouraged him to get a fixed set, proper built-in job with DSC and to connect to an outside big aerial, not a handheld

Blimey, stownsend just messaged me to say the radio set has arrived in sunny Wales. Looks like the post office are better than we all think? :-)
Hope all goes well stownsend, over and out

Thanks jfm !

SWMBO (aka the bank manager) has just told me it looks very nice, I'm now waiting for the next question - what does it actually do ?

Our post must be good, got my MBM a week or so ago !

Cheers
