Fixed Focus Binoculars

I have to concur that in 25 years of sailing mainly racing I never have binoculars on the boat. In a small boat the motion is too quick to enable real concentration on a subject. olewill

Come on now. Are you seriously saying you have never wanted a closer look at the bird sunbathing on that distant yacht in her bikini. Binoculars....ESSENTIAL /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Identifying the occasional buoy might also be useful I suppose. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I keep a pair of Compass (brand) binoculars with a built-in compass on board and would not be without them. I think that my eyesight is pretty good but there are always occasions when more detail is helpful.

At sea, they are good for confirming the identity of buoys and determining the direction of distant vessels.

On the non-tidal Thames, I use them regularly to see whether a lock is filling or emptying and which way the boats inside are facing so that I can decide whether to moor up or just wait for the lock to be ready.

Or 2 gorgeous Italian girls having a shower on deck on a yacht anchored nearby.

They definitely knew I was watching and enjoyed giving a show. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If the lenses don't both adjust, then get rid of them. This is essential for moderately close work (e.g. masthead) or some notice on the harbour wall, etc.

PS - with adjustable eyepieces for close-up work, I think fixed-focus binos are much better for boating than central wheel focus. For 95+% of the time you just pick them up and use them...no need to focus (distance use).

I bought a set of Busnells fixed focus with a compass and range finding. see web page

I wear glasses, but tend to take them off, whereas my wife does not wear glasses. I set the 2 individual lens adjusters to compensate for my short sight, but then my wife has to readjust them for hers. I have now marked the focus rings with his and hers settings. Problem solved.

This is a really smashing set on Bins. The compass is very clear - whereas I had great difficulty with the steiners.

Fixed focus binoculars are not actually focussed to vision, the are rather like a camera lens. I also have glasses (varifocal) and the solution is wheel focus with one eyepiece adjustment in case your eyes are different.
