We named our Kitten Fitzroy as a tribute or perhaps expression of gratitude.

The intention is that future cats may be labour under titles such as Cromarty, Lundy or Dogger; but we had to start with Fitzroy.

Book I read as well as "Attention all Shipping" was "This thing of Darkness" by Harry Thompson. The title is self explanatory if you know anything about or anyone who is Bipolar(manic depressive)

No - someone from the National Maritime Museum gave a talk about Fitzroy to a club I'm a member of.

But thanks for letting me know there is a book about him. I'll add it to my reading list.

Absolutely gripping book (IMHO).

Fitzroy ? HMS Beagle's captain, and the bloke who founded the Meteorological Office. Obviously a key player in the Weather Forecasts that we have come to know and love, but I for one think that Sea Area Finisterre should have stayed Finisterre.

Sea Areas (by definition) ought to be named after a prominent feature of that area, and not after some Naval bloke or other, no matter how important his contribution was.

Yes because Fitzroy was the first Governor of NZ

If you take a look at the Chart of the Magellan Straits nearly every name on it relates to his survey-officers,crew etc.
That the modern chart is still primarily based on the survey says a lot for his meticulous work.
He also established system of storm warnings around coast of UK -raising buckets etc. and tried to encourage proper forcasting but British Government thought it too expensive and cut the budget(nothing new).As a result it was the US government who established the worlds first meterological service.
He was only in his 20s when he took over command of the Beagle the previous Captain having shot himself and despite suffering from what was manic depression he took the Beagle(and Darwin) around the world.
He did write a book about the Beagles Voyages almost forgotten as Darwin was the trendy hero of the day.
Finally when still only in his early 50s he committed suicide.
The other bit of information gleaned from the docu-novel is that because all space on the Beagle was dedicated to some use or another he shared his cabin with Darwin; their books;scientific instruments and the ships chart table-a cabin no bigger than a small yachts cabin with probably no more than 5 foot headroom.

And Port Fitzroy is a stunning harbour on Great Barrier Island off the NZ coast - to plan to sail this weekend (weather permitting)!

Sea area Finisterre is still there, it's just a Spanish one. As the land is theirs, then it's only fair that they should have the name for their sea area. You don't want 2 slightly different ones with the same name.

The above principle of course does not apply to islands. Argentina can bog off.

Fitzroy is a settlement on East Falkland. It was off this settlement that the RFAs Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram were hit during the Falklands War.
