Fitting remote control to old Sabb 8hp engine

The Sabb 8hp engine (probably the original) in my Snapdragon 26 works fine. Problem is the forward and reverse gear lever and throttle are under a small hatch in the cockpit - difficult to access and use especially when single handed. Looking to fit "remote" controls - the throttle I can move quite easily it is just the gear lever. Guess I will need some cable arrangement. Have looked at Morse controls but they appear to be very specific to engine/linkage. Any ideas?

I had this problem on my Pacesetter 29 with a Sabb 8hp..I had a 'cranked lever' which fitted over the stub sticking out of the g/box. The lever (which acually was galvanised water barrel) was cut and welded to cross to the stbd side of the engine and exit thro the side of the locker on the stbd side of the cockpit.

Of course you had to have the locker open to change gear but that actually kept everything neat and tidy.

The chap that bought the boat converted it to teleflex controls but i suspect that it didnt work quite as well due to the amount of 'push' needed to engage the gears.

As you say the throttle was pretty straight forward..I think I used an old choke lever from a motor bike.

I once had a Snapdragon 24 with an agricultural arrangement like this. You had to keep the locker open to change gear! It swapped okay for 2 lever morse - I don't think the single lever job would have worked.

Have you the variable pitch prop with pitch control lever? Is that what you mean by a gear lever? If so I can send you some photos of my arrangement. I'm not sure what hardware you have or may need, but at least it'll give you an idea of how the whole arrangement works (and it works very well). Let me know and I'll take some pics tomorrow.

Unfortunately not. Its the forward/reverse gear model (H-1965) with a conical clutch arrangement. Thanks though.
