I know about the deck end . . . but how do you fasten the top end safely to the mast without weakening it?

I've seen this before . . . in fact there is a link to it on BlueMoment . . . what I don't understand is how the backplate and eye terminal is fitted to the mast. Is this a job I can do myself with the mast up?

Hi Nick.
I riveted a backing plate just under where the genoa halyard exits from (4 rivets) and take it down to an eyebolt near to the forward cleat. seems to work ok. and I run the stormjib sheets to blocks on the minship cleats which seems to give a good sheeting angle.

Selden make an eye specifically for this purpose, it doesn't rely on the rivets for strength, the eye its self hooks behind the wall of the mast for its strength. the eye shouldn't be fitted any further down the mast than 300mm below the existing forestay otherwise you will start to induce pre-bend into the spar when the tension is applied unless you fit either runners, standing aft backstays or jumper bracket & wires. The stay can be removed from the eye as & when necessary.
