Hi, am about to replace the impeller on an inboard Mercruiser (first timer!)- in the manual it shows about 8 screw bolts on a round housing that need to come off and a paper gasket to get at the rubber impeller.I think getting it off and shoving the new one seems pretty straightforward (I hope!)

But just wondering about putting it back together after replacing the impeller because it doesnt mention any sealant needed- is it reasonable that the paper gasket alone will suffice?

Dont want leaks so any advice or experiences greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

IMPELLOR

Sounds straight forward until you get at it, the cover screws are/maybe brass, so go gently so as not to deform them, the impellor removal is easy if you have a tool to do it with, otherwise it's two screw drivers and prising. If the one you are taking out is in bits then look for the broken bits (up the pipe) you may be lucky and they have gone straight through. Rebuild with a bit of fairy liquid to ease the new impellor in it twist's in until the centre meets the spline then it may require "persuasion" to go fully home, if you have a new gasket the a light smear with a none setting gasket paste will give you a belt and braces job.

Id smear some hylomar or similar sealant on both sides of the paper gasket as the plate face may be worn, make sure both faces are clean and free from any old gasket and limescale.

Use 2 screw drives to prise out the impeller, or better still the correct puller if space is limited, if its a merc 220 4.2 you may find it will take some pulling out as its quite long.
