About to order a new engine to fit to a Sadler 29.
I've measured up as per the re-installation form supplied by Beta and found that the engine bearers are not at the same angle as the prop shaft. The man at Beta suggests that we manufacture some hardwood wedges, to accomodate the anti-vibration mountings, and bolt to these.

Is this standard practice - not self fitted an engine before.

The previous engine was a Volvo 2002 which had a slightly angled gearbox so the problem didn't ocurr.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

As long as the wedges are a good fit on top of the existing bearers, and they're are fixed down then there shouldn't be any problem. It would help to know what material the existing bearers are.

I just orderd a Beta, a slightly bigger one thou.
There is a choice of reductors, some of them thought for Volvo replacement.
At least here, in Spain, you will not be charged more choosing the reductor suiting you.

Hope this helps.

Paul

?

The engine angle can be altered by moving one end up or down on the studs. Are you saying they want to angle the studs themselves as well?

When I put my BETA in I had to block up the mounts, but not angle them.

Perhaps the angle that you are trying to achieve is more. Havn't come across this before.

Hi,
The existing bearers are glassed in steel I imagine as the previous engine mounts used threaded bolts to hold them down.
Thanks for the reply.

The likely problem is that the hole centres of the existing mounts are different to the new ones. You should really drill and tap new holes at the right spacing for the Beta mounts, and then use the correct length bolts to go through the new wooden spacer into your new tapped holes.
An alternative might be to get someone to make up a bit of channel section which is tapered along its' length, so you've got the chance of using nuts and bolts to hold the new mounts on.

Thanks for the replies,
Looks as if I'll have to make up some tapered hardwood wedges and bolt these to the existing engine bearers.
Cheers,

Dave

Have you got a problem with the lateral separation of the feet? Beta can supply the engine with "Atomic" feet for an old USA range of boats. They will also manufacture feet specially for you though it may be pricey. They might be able to do the tapering bit if you are not confident.
Incidentally I had no idea which gear lever position would give me forward motion. With the TMA gearbox forward gear means forward motion - at least with the prop they supplied.

Did this two years ago when replacing a Volvo MD11B with a 28 hp Kubota. The angular and height differences were quite significant and I used blocks of nylon to raise the mounts appropriateley. 150 motoring hours later the system is still just fine.

The flexible mount manufacturers however, insist that the mount should not have any angular deflection when the engine is static, adding blocks to change mounting attitude is likely to impose a 'little' static deflection - I have not noticed any adverse effects from this though.

Hi Dave,
I fitted a to 13.5 to a Sadler 26. The 26 has aluminium plate glassed in to the bearers. I didnt have the angle problem but I did need to make up 2" in height. To do this I got some hard wood and gave it 2 coats of epoxy. It has worked fine so far. The wood needs to be sealed as otherwise its likely to swell and mess up your shaft alignment .

Can you use the gearbox from the Volvo?
Just helped a friend fit a new Beta and he was able to use his old gearbox - which was a Hurth, better than the new one probably. just an idea that couold work for you? Beta would fit it, paint it etc, maybe even check old one out for you and cheaper than having the new gearbox!

Thanks to all for the replies.
Had a chance to sit back and think about what is needed and had another chat with Beta Marine.
Looks like we shall go for the 722 engine with the angled gearbox - this should solve the problem.

Should have realised from the start as the Vovo 2002, which we removed, had an angled gearbox.

Cheers, Dave
