Fishing

Re: Crab line.

I have this super thingy I bought in a French chandlers', consists of a sort of spoon lure behind a sort of flat thing that keeps the line fairly high in the water. It streams out behind, with half a dozen hooks with feathers on, and looks really smart.

I have never caught anything!

Gezzs Rob a Penn 9/0 is a Bluewater fishing reel, its a lookout Marlin, Sailfish, shark reel. 200 mtrs of 50Lb test will barely cover the bottom of the spool.

It's definately a bluewater (Med) reel, almost totaly useless East of Brighton.

One thing I would say is that it should have a couple of eye holes mounted on the side plates, that's so you can clip it on to the boat with a lanyard, so that when a fish takes the lure it won't remove the rod from the boat as well.

Good fishing?

If he's going for the full Hemingway experience he needs to drink a couple of beers for breakfast, a couple of half pints of Campari for lunch and then have giant daquiris standing by to refresh him while he's fishing. Also take a really good Cuban fisherman with you, in case anything takes the lure.

Re:Chris Enstone

I've caught Wahoo whilst trolling lures on the way back to the harbour, others have caught marlin. The takes are fairly impressive, I have to say.

indeed

I called on Gregorio Fuentes at Cojimar but he was busy with a group of American tourists just flown in from Cancun, so I forgot the Cuban fisherman and went for a giant Cohiba instead

fish ? at the restaurant..!

thank you Peter

yes there are four holes in the sides of the spool and I found two small turnbuckles to secure the reel to the rod, I ll use the other two for the lanyard

also, how much line should I put in the reel ? I have seen 200-300-500-1000yds spools on sale... plain or braided nylon ? or what else ? the reel box says 675yds 50lbs line I think the actual length would be different if plain nylon or braided..

thanks

Roberto,
If I'm fishing in the warm, I have about 400m of line on the reel, I've been spooled (had all the line taken off the reel) once. You'll get more braid than mono on the reel but personally I wouldn't waste my money on anything other than mono. I haven't bought any for a while but I'd be surprised if you had to pay more than £20-30 for enough 50lb mono to fill your reel.

By the way to maximise the Hemingway experience ensure that as well as the booze (above) you have a Cuban virgin on board to roll your cigar on her thigh.

Best of luck

Chris

I was quite impressed with the Greek fisking methods at Vathi on Kalamos ... stick of dynamite .. seemed to be quite effective.
