Just cruising along the foot of Italy and passed a fishing pot marker - nothing unusual you say, until I tell you that we also just passed the 500 meter depth contour. I'm no fisherman but I'm curious to know what lives at 500M that I want to eat -or is it just a cunning plan? Or even a cunning yacht trap?

Maybe, just maybe, I was moored alongside an Italian fishing boat during a storm on the Greek island Othenoy. They ware fishing with buoyed lines, 45 kilometres long. Fishing for big fish.
Swordfish and tuna. Maybe one of those floats/ markers ?

Probably a trap for Espada fish. Fearsome looking thing, but very tasty!

This was the fishing boat.

Came from the east coast of Italy, was stormbound on the Greek Othenoi island. The “boss” told me their baited lines ware 45 km long, floated about 30 m below the surface, had lots of floats / markers on the line.
They had a fight between some young crew members and the older captain. Young ones wanted to go home, ( Christmas ) the captain found it not safe enough. We had been in the same bad weather ( End of December ) and had to stay on the island for two weeks before the weather settled.
The ferry on the pic was the last one for two weeks.

I thought espada came from the Atlantic, Azores and Madeira.

Whilst "espada" means sword, peixe espada (in Portuguese) is what is called in English scabbard fish. Swordfish is espadarte ( the only member of family xiphiidae) which often causes confusion on restaurant menus in this part of the world.

The picture shown is scabbard fish, I thought that this type of fish came from the Atlantic.

Quite right as far as the picture is concerned and a restricted area of the N.Atlantic at that. but its cousin the silver scabbard ( which is more than twice the size) is very widespread.
