Planning trip across channel next week, thought I might try my hand at fishing for bass, but know nothing about it. Any tips on how to do it, what lure/bait, etc?
really difficult to sail well and fish well as well. If you're single handed you will hook the fish of a lifetime just as the tanker is bearing down on you. Suggest you do it only when running under perhaps just the jennie....or only in a very stable air stream ... otherwise you'll lose the gear or gyb or...whatever. HAVE FUN !!!
Remember to show the appropriate day-shapes / lights. You can then sail through the south coast and French fishing fleets with impunity while watching them taking early action to avoid you.
I have had great success West of the Isle of White and none at all going across the channel. I am not sure if it is because the fish prefer the warmer shallower waters or just bad luck.
Not likely to catch Bass mid channel. Deep water fish tend to hang around "features" such as rocks and wrecks. You would need to fish from a stationaryy or drifting boat.
If you are going to the Cherbourg peninsula there are plenty in the races to the east of Cherbourg. Try drifting just off the rips, I've caught fish jigging with a lure bouncing along the bottom.
I'd go with what others say about trying to catch them on the move, you'd have to be very lucky, the pros troll for them at up to 2 knots.
I've caught the odd mackeral at up to 4-5 knots, but above that all you get is bits of fish jaw hanging off the hooks. Mid channel, the only time I've caught anything was around dawn, or less than a few miles offshore. A paravane is a definite "must".
We might have whales around the coast but a dorado in The Channel! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'd love to see the fisherman's face when one of those came up on the line /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
