I am retiring to the dodecanes islands next year, and hope to spend some time fishing, am thinking that if I was to run a small fishing trip business it would help to pay upkeep of the boat. Any advice' ? (pleace, no dont do it's ) ie; best type boat, and problems.

Having lived and worked in the Dodecanese for a number of years I can confirm what Scarlett says. Officialy as Greece is a full member of the EEC there should be no problem for you to start and run any sort of business you wish in Greece. In practice they will put every obstacle in your way that they can and if your paperwork and boat are not in tip top condition they will haul you off. You will spend at least overnight in jail (no bail for foreigners!) which is not the most pleasant of experiences and then get hit with a hefty fine or even a jail sentence which you can pay off at so much per day.

Whilst I'm not saying 'don't do it' I would seriously advise you to make sure that everything is in order and in place before you start. Even though I can speak Greek it still took me over a yaer to get my restaurant licence through and I was not supposed to trade in the meantime. The Port Police at Rhodes, Kos and the smaller islands are very visible with the tourist trade and can't be reasoned with unless they want to be.

On the boat side, the winds can be very strong after lunch in the summer and gales are not infrequent so a boat that will handle herself well in difficult conditions will be needed. On the plus side the last time I was there, there didn't seem to be that many pure fishing trips going out so there might well be the trade available but put in some serious research before you commit.

Best of luck whatever....

Thanks for the advice. will double check all paper-work and reg's. From what I can gather they seem to be definit about what they call a fishing boat and what they call a leasure boat. In contact with the registrar next month, so hope to find out more then, but thanks for all your advice.
