i fitted a fishfinder/sounder to the inside hull using "araldite" only to find it would not work at all, so iremoved it and tested it in a plastic bowl of water. all seems well.the question is what would be the best method o fitting the trasducer to the inner hull . i was told to make a bund and lid using fibreglass and fill it with water then fit a lid., or would just mastic do the trick? i don't want to go down the road of glueing it in again. any ideas?

What shape is your transponder? Mine is round, and I have a tube bonded to the hull. The transponder lives in the tube, along with oil (I believe cooking oil is fine).

One thing to consider is your hull material. A transponder will not work if there are
any voids in the hull - i.e. a sandwich-type grp hull, or a wooden hull.

As a starting point put some water in the bilges and hold the transponder in place to see if you get a decent signal. Try running the engine in gear to see if the bubbles created by the prop wash affect the signal.
Once you are happy with the position then Araldite the transponder in place. It is imprtant to use the slow setting Araldite rather than the the 5 minute version. The quick setting Araldite will trap air bubbles in the epoxy and degrade the signal.
It worked for me.

thanks for that the unit worked ok on the inner hull just held in place then i used arraldite when it was set several hours later it gave off no signal at all. it's an oval shape so maybe a container filled with oil and sealed could be the answer.
cheers

I did this on my boat (C&C 26) & it worked fine! - I used epoxy.
Just a thought - the araldite should be underneath the transponder so there is no air gap. Around the edges wont work!
Just a thought.
sam :)

sand the area flat and use clear sil or epoxy, there can be NO air spaces between transducer and hull, you want a bonding across the face to the hull, not just the edges.
