Hello all, can someone give me advice on installing a fishfinder. Am i right in presuming that i do not need to make a hole through the hull for the transducer. Where does it go. how is it attached. any recomendations on models. (used for fishing and scuba diving, wrecks) all info or links to good info would be appreciated. ps. the boat is a 40ft yacht.

thanks Tom

what's the boat made of? In hull only tends to work with GRP. However most fishfinders come complete with trams mounted transducer.

Transom mounting requires a couple of screws below the water line to secure the unit then a larger hole above the WL to take the cable into the vessel.

I have been told various things about whether my indoard engine prop wash will affect performance. And generally the answer has been no. However I am fitting a Nasa target in the thru hull hole left by the dead Seafarer sender and have a transom mounted fish finder, that way I can check one against the other.

regards, Nick

Depends - 1 Motor Boat? - mount transducer to the stern area if planning type and avoid if pos. prop. wash. 2 Yacht? - central, forward infront of the keel.
Hull type? - 1 if solid GPR fix* direct to clean hull/bilge floor. 2 if core type with laminated ply etc. cut through to lower GRP and fix*

*fix according to manufactures instructions according to type of transducer.

I have used quite a few fishfinders for wreck fishing, mainly in power craft.
I have an eagle fishfinder connected to an old seafarer transducer and it works perfect (yacht) A good tip if shooting thro hull is to take the boat out to deep water
get a tin of swarfega place a dollop inside of hull in front of keel, and move the transducer around untill you get the best picture it will easilywork. then bond the transducer in. A good fishfinder for wreckfishing is the koden colour set under £500.
Good luck.

If your boat has a flattish bit of floor, I have found it satisfactory to stick on about 4 inches of plastic wastepipe with fibreglass and resin, pop in the transducer and fill with castor oil. It seems to work well in my case.

There is a reason for using castor oil as opposed to any other, sadly I've quite forgotten what it is!

Best of luck
