If you get hold of some decent oak sawdust and chuck it in the fuel ring and keep the air flow low with judiciously placed alu foil, it will hot smoke grub above it.

If you can't find any oak sawdust (don't use stuff generated bya chain saw as it contains mineral oil) PM me.
 
I've used an aluminium box smoker on a gas ring. Bit over a foot long and half as wide. Swedish if I recall. Pretty cheap, though it was a while ago. Good results with mackeral and white fish.
Bear in mind that hot smoking is for flavour, not preserving.
